We’re looking for a Director, Internal Communications to join our Marketing and Business Development Area.

When you come work with us, here’s what you’ll find:

  • Work that is meaningful. We are a fast-paced, deadline-driven consulting firm that only works with nonprofit clients who are essential to advancing the cause of justice, alleviating suffering, and solving the greatest challenges we face.
  • Commitment to Anti-Racism, Equity, and Inclusion (AEI). We envision an anti-oppressive workplace that ensures an inclusive employee experience, promotes equitable outcomes for staff, and supports clients to center accessibility and anti-racism in their programs.
  • Colleagues you can count on. Kind, dedicated, passionate people who work collaboratively to get things done and help you do your best.
  • An organization that embraces change. We strive to improve and adapt and always seek new ways that we can contribute to a just, inclusive, and sustainable world. We are also continually working on making M+R a better place for our staff.

So that’s us. Now about the work:

The Director, Internal Communications role is part of our Shared Services Division -- comprising four areas: finance and accounting; operations; people; and marketing. We ensure M+R is positioned to deliver outstanding services to clients such as Planned Parenthood, Feeding America, International Rescue Committee, NRDC, and many more.

Day-to-day, our marketing and business development efforts ensure that M+R’s brand, creative perspective, culture, and expertise are clearly communicated, understood, and consistent across all activities and materials.

Here’s what you’ll be doing in this role:

The Director, Internal Communications shapes M+R’s internal messaging by leading employee communication strategies, managing internal channels, and partnering with the People and Culture team to foster a strong company culture. They provide expert counsel on internal and external communications, collaborating with leadership to design and implement strategies that support key M+R initiatives and reinforce business priorities; and play a leadership role in cultivating a workplace environment that aligns with the company’s core values, bridging the work of the People and Culture team, brand identity, and the firm’s communications.

    Key Responsibilities:

    Strategy & Leadership

  • Develop and implement forward-thinking communications, collaborating with leadership to design and implement strategies that support key firm initiatives, reinforce business priorities, and ensure staff receive timely, engaging, and meaningful information.
  • Drive the agenda for strategic and/or tactical discussions during bi-weekly Internal Communications Team meetings and monthly all-staff meetings.
  • Serve as a strategic advisor and firmwide resource on belonging, anti-racism, equity, and inclusion.
  • Under the direction of the Senior Creative Director, Marketing and Brand, develop and maintain M+R's brand identity, ensuring communications, programs, events, and employee experiences align with firm values, culture, and strategic priorities.
  • Create opportunities to strengthen employee engagement through storytelling, recognition, and communications that highlight staff, teams, and organizational impact.
  • Change Management
  • Lead the planning and development of communications during sensitive or transformative firm-wide shifts to include restructurings, new service rollouts, or crises, minimizing disruption and fostering buy-in, in close coordination with CEO, CPO, and other senior leaders.
  • Support organizational change efforts through thoughtful communication planning, stakeholder engagement, and change management strategies.
  • Brand-Culture Alignment and Cross-Functional Collaboration
  • Partner closely with Marketing/Business Development and People and Culture Areas to align internal messaging with branding, employer reputation, and internal culture. This includes monitoring Glassdoor and other sites that impact M+R’s employer brand and presenting recommendations to address concerns raised.
  • Serve as lead strategist and executor of firm-wide teambuilding activities to include all-staff conferences, leadership retreats, and other events.
  • Create and manage content of Homebase, the Broadcast newsletter, bi-weekly marketing digests, town halls, employee surveys, listening sessions, Slack, and other digital or print platforms to optimize employee and stakeholder engagement, and identify themes, trends, and opportunities for improvement.

Skills and experiences required for this role:

  • Undergraduate degree in communications, public relations, marketing, journalism or another related field.
  • At least 7 years of communications experience preferably in the nonprofit sector or a professional services firm.
  • Exceptional storytelling, grammar, and editing skills with the ability to distill complex information into clear, compelling communications for diverse audiences.
  • Exceptional communicator (oral and written) and active listener with the ability to communicate with candor, clarity, and authenticity; engage thoughtfully with diverse perspectives; and influence and inspire audiences at all levels of the organization.
  • Demonstrated experience in event strategy, planning, and management, including the development and execution of firm-wide events such as all-staff conferences, leadership retreats, town halls, team-building activities, and other employee engagement events; ability to manage event logistics, stakeholder coordination, communications, timelines, and execution from concept through completion.
  • Demonstrated change management experience, including developing and executing communication strategies for organizational change, navigating ambiguity and uncertainty, anticipating stakeholder needs and concerns, and helping to explain the “why”, “what”, and “how” of change.
  • Experience partnering with senior leaders and cross-functional teams to build alignment, address concerns, foster trust and engagement, and support successful adoption of new strategies, structures, processes, programs, or ways of working.
  • Proven experience collaborating across teams and building strong relationships with colleagues and stakeholders at all levels.
  • Professional and positive approach; self-motivated, collaborative, creative, and able to work independently and take initiative.
  • Demonstrated creative and critical thinking skills with a track record of contributing to culture-building and employee engagement.
  • Strong business acumen, relationship management, strategy development, project management, and problem solving skills.
  • Exercises a high degree of tact, diplomacy, discretion, and sound judgment.

Skills and experiences we expect of all M+R employees:

  • Demonstrated commitment to anti-racism, equity, and inclusion.

  • Proven track record to successfully pick up new skills, including learning new technologies.
  • Drive to seek what can be improved and offer ways to fix any potential roadblocks.
  • Comfort admitting what you don’t know and recognizing that feedback is part of the learning process.
  • Ability to communicate persuasively in a way that articulates your ideas and conveys your expertise, whether on the phone, in-person, or in writing.
