The Role

We are seeking a highly organized, detail-oriented Director of Finance to strategically develop, maintain, and oversee the systems that support the financial health and long-term sustainability of the organization. As a hands-on financial expert, you will lead budget development and tracking and continually strengthen our core financial systems—spend management, contract execution, and business planning and budgeting. This role plays a strong supporting role in fundraising and strategic planning.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Strategy & Planning

  • Lead annual budgeting, forecasting, and long-term financial planning, building the analyses and tools that model organizational cash flow, costs, and scenarios.

  • Partner with program and department leaders to support budget ownership, forecasting, and financial decision-making.

  • Prepare, analyze, and present accurate, timely financial reports—including monthly and annual financial statements, budget-to-actual analysis, cash flow plans, and dashboards.

  • Oversee CBV’s externally managed investment portfolio in accordance with the Board-approved investment policy, including coordinating with the investment advisor, monitoring performance, liquidity, fees, compliance, and expected withdrawals, and providing regular reporting to leadership, the Finance Committee, and the Board.

  • Communicate critical financial matters clearly to the CEO, Leadership Team, and Board Finance Committee, and equip leadership with reliable data for planning and decision-making.

  • Oversee the accounting and administration of SAFE agreements and other direct or mission-related investments, including maintaining complete records, monitoring conversion and liquidity events, reviewing valuation and accounting treatment, and coordinating with legal counsel, auditors, and program leadership as needed.

  • Identify revenue gaps and new program costs to inform fundraising strategy and priorities.

  • Support business development and earned-revenue strategies.

Accounting, Audit & Compliance

  • Oversee the monthly close and balance sheet reconciliation process, including ensuring all material accounts are reconciled timely, adequately supported, and independently reviewed.

  • Oversee semi-monthly payroll approval, including payroll changes, gross pay, benefit deductions, retirement contributions, payroll taxes, and related payroll journal entries.

  • Review and approve journal entries, restricted and conditional revenue, net asset releases, and related supporting schedules.

  • Make technical accounting decisions and provide final review of higher-risk areas.

  • Oversee accounting functions, including payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivable, reconciliations, grant tracking, and restricted-funding analysis.

  • Lead the annual audit; liaise with external auditors and the Board Finance Committee; oversee Form 990 preparation and other compliance requirements, including contracts, 1099s, and investment activity.

  • Establish, monitor, and strengthen internal controls, finance policies, and approval workflows to safeguard organizational assets.

  • Ensure compliance with tax laws and regulatory requirements.

  • Implement and maintain effective contract and financial management/reporting systems; ensure billing and collection schedules are met and that cash flow supports operational requirements.

  • Oversee banking, insurance, payment systems, contracts, state registrations, legal coordination, recurring compliance obligations, and key external finance partners.

  • Continuously strengthen finance policies, procedures, controls, and documentation to support compliance and sustainable growth without creating unnecessary complexity.

Grants & Contributed and Earned Revenue

  • Lead the financial tracking and management of all grants, including monitoring expenditures, analyzing financial data, and ensuring spending aligns with funder agreements and reporting requirements to ensure high quality stewardship.

  • Partner with the Chief Development Officer on multi-year revenue modeling and planning and scenario modeling.

  • Partner with Development to integrate fundraising pipeline projections, grant payment schedules, and cash flow forecasting into organizational planning.

  • Partner with Development and program leaders on grant budgets, restricted-funding compliance, donor reporting, and revenue forecasting.

  • Provide financial analysis to support institutional, corporate, and individual fundraising strategies.

  • Own and oversee Camelback’s fiscal sponsorship program, including program policies, due diligence, agreements, capacity and risk assessment, approval of disbursements, and financial and programmatic compliance throughout the sponsorship lifecycle.

Team Leadership & Supervision

  • Set clear goals, priorities, expectations, and accountability, and provide regular supervision, coaching, feedback, and performance support.

  • Help manage workload, deadlines, cross-functional responsibilities, and competing priorities, and support their professional development and role clarity.

  • Build a Finance team culture that is collaborative, organized, responsive, and grounded in service to the mission.

  • Ensure external vendors and consultants are well-managed, cost-effective, and aligned with organizational needs.

The Person

You are a senior finance leader who is equally comfortable shaping strategy and ensuring the details get done. You bring calm, clarity, and structure to complex environments, and you understand that strong internal infrastructure is not separate from mission impact—it is what makes mission impact sustainable.

You are a trusted advisor to executive leadership and a practical partner to staff. You can move from Board-level financial strategy to workflow design, from audit oversight to systems to staff supervision, without losing sight of the bigger picture.

You lead with sound judgment, transparency, discretion, and care. You know how to build systems that are clear enough to support accountability and flexible enough to support people. You are energized by helping a mission-driven organization operate with greater focus, financial clarity, and internal alignment.

Experience & Expertise
  • Significant experience leading nonprofit finance.

  • Strong knowledge of nonprofit accounting, budgeting, forecasting, cash-flow planning, financial reporting, audits, Form 990, internal controls, and regulatory compliance.

  • Experience supporting executive leadership, Boards, and Board committees.

  • Experience supervising staff and managing external vendors, consultants, and professional service providers.

  • Strong project management skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities across functions.

  • Experience building or improving systems, workflows, documentation, and internal controls.

  • Ability to communicate financial information clearly to non-finance audiences.

  • Working knowledge of payroll and benefits-related finance, and familiarity with HR and people-operations compliance.

  • Comfort working in a small, entrepreneurial nonprofit environment where leaders wear multiple hats and senior staff are closely engaged with execution, not just strategy.

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent professional experience in accounting, finance, or related field

  • Demonstrated proficiency with financial, payroll, benefits, and business operations systems, including QuickBooks Online, Airbase, Rippling, Employee Navigator, Fathom, and Google Workspace.

Preferred Experience
  • CPA or MBA preferred.

  • Experience overseeing nonprofit investment portfolios and working with external investment advisors, executive leadership, Boards, and Board committees.

  • Experience managing the accounting and administration of SAFE agreements or other direct venture investments.

  • Experience administering fiscal sponsorship programs and managing the related due diligence, agreements, disbursements, reporting, compliance, and ongoing sponsee relationships.

  • Experience with leadership transitions, organizational change, or scaling internal infrastructure.

  • Experience with remote or distributed teams.

  • Familiarity with tools such as QuickBooks Online, Airbase, Rippling, Employee Navigator, Fathom, and Google Workspace.

  • Experience in racial equity, education, entrepreneurship, philanthropy, or social impact organizations.

How You Work
  • A strategic thinker who turns big-picture priorities into clear plans, systems, and next steps.

  • A steady, trusted leader who handles confidential financial, personnel, and organizational matters with discretion.

  • A clear communicator who can translate complex finance topics into practical guidance.

  • A systems builder who documents processes, improves workflows, and creates structure without overcomplicating things.

  • A collaborative partner who works effectively across leadership, staff, Board members, and external vendors.

  • A hands-on leader who will roll up their sleeves when needed while still building capacity for the long term.

  • An equity-minded decision-maker who understands that policies, systems, and financial decisions shape organizational culture.

How We'll Measure Success
  • Budgets, forecasts, cash projections, financial reporting, and Board materials are accurate, timely, and provide clear insight for decision-making.

  • Finance systems, policies, procedures, internal controls, compliance processes and vendor oversight practices are well documented, consistently applied, and designed to support the organization as it grows and evolves.

  • Accounting has clear priorities, appropriate oversight, and the support needed to effectively manage day-to-day accounting operations.

  • Camelback navigates leadership transition and organizational change with greater clarity, coordination, and operational confidence.
