About the role:
Samsara is seeking a Director of Engineering to define and drive the next generation of our Routing products—a critical, high-visibility domain powering how our customers move people, vehicles, and goods efficiently and safely.
This leader will oversee the entire lifecycle of routing from Route Planning through Route Execution shaping these into cohesive, scalable platforms and incubating new product bets in the routing ecosystem. You will combine strategic product thinking with deep engineering rigor to build systems that directly influence the efficiency of the world’s physical operations.
You’ll lead a world-class engineering organization responsible for building the foundation of Samsara’s intelligent routing stack—from real-time route optimization, exception handling to next-gen driver experiences powered by data and AI.
This is a remote position open to candidates in the U.S. Relocation assistance will not be provided for this role.
- Define the Technical and Product Vision:
Set the long-term architecture and technical direction for the Routing & Navigation portfolio. Balance innovation with operational excellence, ensuring scalability, reliability, and exceptional user experience. - Drive Product-Focused Engineering Execution:
Partner closely with Product and Design leaders to translate customer needs and product strategy into an actionable roadmap. Ensure your teams ship with speed, quality, and measurable customer impact. - Scale and Inspire a High-Performing Organization:
Lead and grow a multi-team, multi-level engineering organization (including managers and ICs). Foster a culture of technical ownership, autonomy, and product intuition, empowering teams to make bold, data-driven decisions. - Accelerate Innovation in New Bets:
Identify and incubate new product opportunities in the routing and logistics space, exploring emerging areas such as predictive routing, real-time re-optimization, and connected navigation experiences. - Champion Operational Excellence:
Build for scale and reliability—owning performance, monitoring, and on-call health across critical routing services that support thousands of fleets in motion.
- Proven Technical Depth:
Experience architecting and scaling distributed systems in domains such as routing engines, mapping services, telematics, logistics optimization, or other real-time systems. - Engineering Leadership:
10+ years of engineering experience with at least 5 years leading multi-team organizations managing managers. Proven record of building strong engineering cultures and mentoring technical leaders. - Product-Driven Mindset:
Ability to deeply understand customer workflows and partner with Product to make tradeoffs between speed, impact, and quality. - Operational Excellence:
Track record of driving availability, performance, and security for mission-critical SaaS systems in high-growth environments. - Strategic Leadership:
Exceptional ability to connect technical architecture to long-term business and product strategy. Skilled at scaling systems and organizations simultaneously.
- BS/MS in Computer Science or a related technical field.
- Experience scaling products and revenue through a high growth phase.
- Background in B2B SaaS, telematics, or mobility platforms.
- Experience with mapping data (e.g., OSM, HERE, Google Maps APIs) or logistics optimization a bonus.
Samsara’s Compensation Philosophy: Samsara’s compensation program is designed to deliver Total Direct Compensation (based on role, level, and geography) that is at or above market. We do this through our base salary + bonus/variable + restricted stock unit awards (RSUs) for eligible roles. For eligible roles, a new hire RSU award may be awarded at the time of hire, and additional RSU refresh grants may be awarded annually.
We pay for performance, and top performers in eligible roles may receive above-market equity refresh awards which allow employees to achieve higher market.
