We are looking for a strong EHS leader to join our team. This role leads EHS professionals at the corporate level and influences others by promoting a proactive approach to recognizing and mitigating environmental, health, and safety risks. You will collaborate closely with the EHS Managing Director, Senior EHS Director, Corporate EHS Directors and their teams, Senior Regional EHS Managers, EHS operations teams, and operational leaders across the organization. Together, we will strive to achieve our shared vision of a secure and thriving work environment, ensuring environmental, health, and safety is at the heart of our business operations.

WHAT YOU’LL DO:

The below statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this job. They are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all responsibilities, duties, and skills required of personnel so classified. May perform other duties as assigned.

  • EHS Compliance: You will be responsible for establishing and maintaining compliance with applicable federal and state EHS regulations as well as ensuring uniform application of the company’s EHS programs. You will assist in the evaluations of risk and implementation of related programs to prevent injury, illness, and ensure environmental compliance. You will partner with operations to develop effective and innovative solutions to ensure a safe and environmentally sound workplace.

  • Corporate Program Development and Administration: You will assist in developing and effectively implementing corporate EHS policy, programs, and training materials. You will participate in corporate training and business meetings as appropriate.

  • Smithfield Injury Prevention System (SIPS), EMS, ISO and Other Internal Audits: You will ensure facilities are prepared for corporate and external audits and are closing out open audit findings in a timely manner. You will lead and serve on corporate audit teams as assigned.

  • Medical Management and Worker's Compensation: You will be accountable for coordinating procedures and protocols for effective case management and will assist operations managing workers compensation claims and mitigating costs.

  • Leadership: Lead Sr. Regional Managers driving EHS into operations while supporting a positive employee experience through leadership, development, and coaching.

  • EHS Programs: We are looking for a team member with strong background in EHS systems and EHS programs. We are also looking for a team member with experience in EHS databases (Cority, etc.), safety and environmental risk mitigation, EHS program development, EHS Audits, Ergo/Fit for Work, EHS Technologies, SDS approval systems, EHS rules tracking, fire system liaison, work comp liaison, EHS training liaison, and EHS alerts.

WHAT WE’RE SEEKING:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.   • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university in environmental, safety, health or related field and 10+ years related experience, required.

  • Minimum of 5+ years’ experience in a position of leadership to include team development and management, required.

  • Ability to make strategic decisions while in stressful situations including leading emergency response efforts.

  • Energized by collaboration through travel to other locations 50% of the time depending on the initiative being executed.

  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deliverables with focus and efficiency.

  • Able to interpret, design, and communicate key EHS data to internal stakeholders and to actionize EHS to drive results

  • Ability to make strategic decisions and plan and execute EHS systems and programs with operations.

OTHER SKILLS THAT MAKE YOU STAND OUT:

  • Excellent knowledge of EPA and OSHA regulations, and workers’ compensation processes. PSM/RMP experience a plus.

  • Bilingual skills a plus(preferred but not required: speak, read, write, address groups, individuals, conduct investigations, counseling, training, mentoring using language other than English – as applicable to the Business Unit.)

  • Strong oral and written communication skills for drafting reports, business correspondence, and procedures.

  • Effective presentation skills and ability to respond to questions from a diverse audience.

  • Detail oriented.

  • Extensive knowledge of Microsoft Office and EHS database systems such as Cority.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • You will lead EHS Sr. Regional Managers who are part of the corporate EHS team. Sr. EHS Managers provide direct support to operation EHS teams and operation leadership teams so your team will provide a significant role between the EHS Corporate and EHS operation team members and leaders.

  • Weather Conditions: Depending on the job context, you might work in various weather conditions, including exposure to outdoor elements.

  • Terrain: If you visit project sites, you may encounter uneven terrain, so mobility and adaptability are essential.

The expected pay range for this position is $140,000 - $182,500 annually.

Smithfield Foods provides pay ranges that reflect its good faith estimate of the salary or hourly wage the company reasonably expects to pay for a position at the time of hire. Individual compensation will be determined based on several factors, including but not limited to, the scope and responsibilities of the role, location of the position, the candidate’s qualifications and experience, internal equity, external market pay for comparable positions and budget considerations.
