Epoch AI is looking for designers to help us turn complex research on AI into dashboards and data visualizations. We are open to two different areas of specialization: product and web design, or data visualization.
About the role

We are looking for a Designer to help us communicate our research. You will work with our design team and report to our Head of Design, designing the interfaces, dashboards, and visualizations behind projects like our AI Models database and Trends dashboard. This work directly shapes how our research is understood.

We are hiring for two specializations and will consider candidates for either:

  • Product and web design.  Focus on our website and interactive data products: information architecture, user flows, responsive interfaces, and the design system that holds them together.

  • Data visualization. Focus on how we present evidence: charts, interactive graphs, and visual explanations for reports, dashboards, and social media that make quant itative findings clear to non-expert audiences.

This role is fully remote, and we are able to offer contracts in many countries, but we have a strong preference for candidates in North and South American timezones. We invite anyone who is interested to apply, regardless of background, experience, or credentials. Please do not include a cover letter, photograph, or headshot of yourself, or any personal information that is not relevant to the role for which you're applying (including marital status, age, identity traits, etc.).

Applications are rolling.

Practicalities

  • Location: Remote. Strong preference for candidates in North and South American time zones
  • Work Hours: Flexible, with regular overlap with US Eastern working hours
  • Travel Requirement: Staff attend three in-person retreats per year
  • Compensation: Annual salary of $100k–$140k USD for Designer; up to $170,000 for candidates hired at the Senior Designer level. Exact salary will reflect experience and location. Salaries are not restricted to USD; contracts and payments are usually in local currencies, converted at one-year average exchange rates
  • Application Deadline: Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis. We encourage you to apply early
  • Reports to: Head of Design

What You'll Own

  • Design responsive user interfaces, graphs, and visualizations
  • Uncover design solutions to user and organizational needs
  • Create design specifications, mock-ups, and prototypes to explore design concepts
  • Ensure adherence to design systems and visual consistency across our work
  • Collaborate with researchers, engineers, and communications staff to get work from concept to shipped
  • Depending on your interests and skills, you could get involved in other aspects of our work, such as contributing to our design library and conducting user research and usability testing

About You

    Must Haves
  • 2+ years of experience designing interactive digital products (5+ for Senior Designer)
  • A portfolio demonstrating strong work in UI/UX design, data visualization, or both
  • Strong grasp of typography, color, and layout
  • Ability to work comfortably in Figma, including auto-layout and components
  • Good judgment about what makes a design simple, clear, and consistent with an existing brand
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment
  • Interest in Epoch AI’s work
  • Nice-to-haves
  • Familiarity with Epoch AI’s research or related topics
  • Experience with scientific communication
  • Experience in illustration or branding
  • Familiarity with front-end development (HTML, CSS, JS)
  • Experience with Python libraries like Matplotlib/Plotly or other data visualization programming tools
  • Good written communication skills
  • If you don’t tick all these boxes but think you would be a great fit, please consider applying anyway!

Compensation & Benefits

  • Annual salary between $100,000–$150,000 USD, depending on location and experience.
  • Salaries are not restricted to USD, and contracts and payments are usually in local currencies. Conversions are based on one-year average exchange rates.
  • Fully remote environment, including flexible work hours.

  • Generous paid time off (PTO), including no specific limit on PTO with 30 days per year protected, unlimited personal and sick leave, and 4 months paid parental leave for permanent staff with at least 12 months of tenure (prorated parental leave if less than 12 months).
  • A flexible and generous expense policy for you to spend on equipment and a large range of productivity tools or learning/development opportunities, including unlimited spending on AI tools, subject to regulations and manager approval.
  • Paid work trips, including 3 staff retreats per year and relevant conferences.
  • Access to our very well-equipped offices in Berkeley, California, including paid meals, snacks, gym, and more. All staff, independently of where they are based, have access to the office for at least 20 days each year.
