Design Director – Commercial Design Team

About the Role
As a Design Director on the Commercial Design Team, you will be responsible for leading multi-disciplinary teams in envisioning and delivering high-impact, customer-centered experiences that align with Lilly’s commercial strategy. You will shape the creative vision, champion design excellence, and foster a culture of curiosity and innovation across projects that span major Lilly.com initiatives, product launches, digital campaigns, and flagship customer-facing platforms.
In this role, you will balance hands-on creative contribution with strategic leadership, ensuring every design output—from concept through delivery—meets the highest standards of craft, accessibility, and brand expression. You’ll partner closely with design, product, engineering, and business stakeholders to align customer needs with key business objectives to ensure Lilly provides memorable, meaningful experiences for patients, healthcare professionals, and caregivers.
Responsibilities
Lead the definition of design vision and strategy for commercial programs, with a focus on elevating the design of Lilly.com, brand websites, and consumer applications.
Oversee the execution of design work across multiple initiatives, ensuring consistent application of brand, quality design standards, and customer-centered thinking.
Inspire and mentor designers of all levels, fostering professional growth and elevating the overall design quality bar.
Collaborate with cross-functional leaders to align creative strategies with business objectives.
Facilitate the design process from ideation to launch, ensuring decisions are informed by research, data, and user insights.
Represent the design perspective in strategic planning discussions, influencing decision-making across all levels.
Promote a culture of experimentation and rapid iteration while maintaining clarity of vision and measurable outcomes.
Articulate design decisions persuasively to stakeholders and executives, connecting creative choices to strategic value.
What You’ll Bring
10+ years of design experience, with 2+ years in a leadership role guiding multi-disciplinary design teams.
Proven track record of delivering impactful, digital experiences work across multiple channels and platforms, including large-scale websites and consumer-facing applications.
Ability to navigate complex organizations, build relationships, and influence across functions and levels.
Deep expertise in visual and interaction design principles, with experience applying and contributing to the core elements of design systems.
Strong facilitation and storytelling skills, able to translate complex ideas into compelling narratives.
Experience managing creative priorities across multiple concurrent projects in a fast-paced environment.
A collaborative and optimistic spirit that embraces challenges and fosters creativity.
Basic Requirements;
- Bachelor’s degree in Design, Digital Design, Visual Communication, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
- 10+ years of design experience, with 2+ years in a leadership role guiding multi-disciplinary design teams

Bonus Points:
Experience in healthcare, pharmaceuticals, or other regulated industries.
Experience designing for and working within enterprise content management systems (CMS), such as Adobe Experience Manager (AEM), Drupal, or similar platforms

Actual compensation will depend on a candidate’s education, experience, skills, and geographic location. The anticipated wage for this position is
$141,000 - $246,400Full-time equivalent employees also will be eligible for a company bonus (depending, in part, on company and individual performance).
