TEGNA, the parent company of 64 television stations in 51 U.S. markets, is hiring a Graphics and Data Visualization Journalist who supports the Enterprise data journalism team by turning analysis and reporting into clear, accurate, and engaging visual storytelling. This role works closely with the Data Journalist–Reporter and Data Producer & Researcher, as well as the Product team, to ensure data findings are understandable, accessible, and useful to audiences. 

This role plays a critical role in shaping how data-driven stories and tools are experienced across digital, streaming, and broadcast platforms. 

The preferred work location is Denver, but candidates in any TEGNA market will be considered. This is a hybrid role.  

Key Responsibilities 

  • Create charts, maps, and graphics that clearly communicate findings from data-driven reporting. 
  • Translate analysis and reporting led by the Data Journalist–Producer into visual form. 
  • Help audiences quickly understand scale, trends, and comparisons through effective visual design. 
  • Produce fast, clean visuals for breaking news and timely explainers. 
  • Contribute visual storytelling to deeper enterprise and investigative projects. 
  • Adapt visuals for use across digital, streaming, and broadcast platforms. 
  • AI-assisted tools to support data visualization and analysis workflows. 
  • Partner with the Product team to develop interactive maps, dashboards, and explainers. 
  • Contribute to repeatable, data-driven tools that can be localized across markets. 
  • Maintain visual consistency across enterprise data products. 
  • Ensure visuals accurately represent underlying data and analysis. 
  • Clearly communicate uncertainty, limitations, or caveats when appropriate. 
  • Apply accessibility and usability best practices 
  • Collaborate with the Data Producer & Researcher to understand methodology and data constraints. 
  • Work with contributing reporters and local market teams to adapt visuals for their audiences. 
  • Support the broader goals of the Enterprise Content Team through visual expertise. 
  • Develop static and simple animated assets as needed. 
  • Ensure creative aligns with brand guidelines. 

Qualifications 

  • 3 – 5 years demonstrated experience in data visualization, visual journalism, or information design. 
  • Experience producing publication-grade charts and visuals, in Adobe Illustrator, Figma or in the browser preferred. 
  • Experience producing interactive journalism using modern programming frameworks like Svelte preferred. 
  • Experience using AI-assisted tools to support data visualization and analysis workflows. 
  • Proficiency with visualization tools or frameworks such as: 
  • Flourish, Tableau, Carto, Canva, or similar tools 
  • GIS tools (QGIS, ArcGIS, PostGIS) 
  • Proficiency in design tools such as Adobe Creative Suite or equivalent 
  • JavaScript-based libraries (e.g., D3) a plus 
  • Strong design fundamentals and attention to detail. 
  • Working knowledge of HTML/CSS and basic JavaScript. 
  • Ability to work quickly and collaboratively in a lean, enterprise reporting environment.

Pay Range
$45$55 USD

Our 401(k) program offers full, part-time and temporary employees the opportunity to contribute 1% - 80% of their pay on a pre-tax basis to TEGNA’s 401(k). Contributions made up to the first 4% of pay are eligible for a 100% match from the company and are 100% vested from day one.

Regardless of participation in TEGNA medical plans, ALL employees and their eligible family members receive nine free virtual doctor’s appointments with a physician through Teladoc, and 12 free annual therapy sessions with a licensed clinician through Spring Health.

TEGNA offers a generous Paid Time Off (PTO) benefit as well as nine paid holidays per year.
