About Us

Our mission is to raise AGI with the richness of human intelligence — curious, witty, imaginative, and full of unexpected brilliance.

Surge was founded by engineers and researchers who dreamed of building the next generation AI. We're building a platform that powers the most powerful models in the world in partnership with companies like OpenAI, Anthropic, Meta, and Google.

At Surge, we believe the path to AGI isn't just about scaling compute—it's about embracing the unlimited ceiling of human intelligence and creativity in the data that shapes these systems. Our platform combines elite human expertise with cutting-edge tools for scalable oversight, from building rich RL environments to conducting rigorous evaluations that go beyond benchmarks. We've run a profitable business from day one without raising venture funding.

The Role

As a Data Scientist at Surge, you'll use data to solve problems that are central to how we operate and grow. You'll partner with internal teams to uncover patterns, develop metrics, design experiments, and build tools that turn analysis into action. Your work could span detecting fraud and abuse, understanding what drives growth, or generating insights into the data we deliver to customers.

This role is ideal for someone who thrives on impact and iteration — someone who loves digging into ambiguous problems, rapidly prototyping data workflows, and turning messy real-world data into actionable insight. Your work will sit at the heart of the platform behind frontier AI development, helping us grow and improve the quality of the data that shapes the most advanced models.

What We’re Looking for
  • Curiosity About AI - You're interested in how AI models are developed and how high-quality data contributes to their capabilities.

  • Strong Problem-Solving Judgment - You can turn an open-ended question into a concrete analytical approach, weigh tradeoffs, and identify what's worth pursuing.

  • Cross-Functional Collaboration - You enjoy working with operations, engineering, and other teams to understand problems, communicate findings, and turn insights into changes people can use.

  • SQL and Python Proficiency - You're comfortable writing SQL and Python to analyze data, build pipelines, and prototype workflows. You don't need to be a software engineer, but code is one of your primary tools.

What You'll Do
  • Investigate questions related to fraud, growth, or customer data quality and performance.

  • Develop metrics, analyses, and dashboards that help teams understand trends and prioritize action.

  • Build tools and automated workflows that help teams detect issues, identify opportunities, and act at scale.
