Role Overview:
The National Account Executive (NAE) has strategic ownership of large and/or complex national account relationships, with responsibility for retaining, growing, and strengthening a book of business. The NAE serves as a trusted strategic and consultative partner to customers and producers, bringing together financial, underwriting, claims, market, product, and client insights to help customers achieve their objectives.
The NAE leads the overall client relationship and orchestrates cross-functional partners across Sales, Underwriting, Service, Claims, Implementation, and other areas to deliver an integrated National Account Experience. The role is expected to anticipate client needs, influence senior stakeholders, identify profitable growth opportunities, and drive strong outcomes in persistency, profitability, rate renewal actions, referrals, and expansion of existing relationships.
**Preferred location is Chicago, IL or Pittsburgh, PA; however, other locations may be considered for highly qualified candidates.**
What You'll Do:
• Strategic Account Leadership: Own and execute disciplined book-of-business and account engagement plans with clear goals, strategies, and actions designed to retain, grow, and strengthen customer relationships.
• Trusted Advisor: Develop deep knowledge of each customer's business, benefits strategy, workforce priorities, financial objectives, and broader organizational landscape; translate that knowledge into proactive recommendations and a differentiated client experience.
• Executive Presence and Influence: Build credibility with senior customer, producer, and internal stakeholders. Communicate complex concepts clearly, bring a point of view, and influence decisions across multiple levels and functions.
• Commercial and Growth Mindset: Identify and pursue opportunities to deepen relationships, expand lines of coverage, generate credible referrals, and contribute to profitable growth. Partner with Sales Representatives using customer and producer insights to improve sales success.
• Data-Driven Consulting: Use financial, underwriting, claims, utilization, market, and client data to identify trends, risks, and opportunities and develop insightful, consultative recommendations for customers and producers.
• Cross-Functional Leadership: Lead across Underwriting, Sales, Service, Claims, Implementation, and other internal partners to align priorities, remove obstacles, and deliver coordinated solutions that meet customer needs.
• Proactive Problem Solving: Anticipate emerging customer needs, service risks, renewal challenges, and market changes. Take ownership of outcomes and mobilize the right resources before issues escalate.
• Renewal Strategy and Execution: Coordinate renewal strategy and requirements for assigned cases in partnership with Sales, Underwriting, Claims, and other disciplines. Use trends and analysis to develop consultative product reviews and financial analyses, and proactively identify rate guarantee extension opportunities 12+ months prior to renewal where appropriate.
• Client and Producer Engagement: Plan and lead purposeful client and producer meetings with proactive agendas, relevant insights, and clear follow-up. Keep abreast of changing benefits, HR needs, corporate priorities, and competitive dynamics.
• Onboarding and Client Experience: Provide strategic oversight of onboarding for new sold cases and additional lines of coverage. Set appropriate expectations, ensure alignment across internal partners, and help deliver a seamless transition into ongoing account management.
• Service and Issue Oversight: Partner with the National Account Service Representative and other service partners to ensure effective administration and issue resolution. Maintain accountability for the overall client experience while empowering the appropriate partners to execute day-to-day service activities.
• Continuous Improvement and Innovation: Embrace a culture of learning and continuous improvement. Challenge existing approaches, champion change, and contribute ideas that evolve the National Account Experience and help New York Life anticipate market trends and deliver industry-leading solutions.
• Business Outcomes: Maintain a primary focus on persistency, profitability, customer satisfaction, growth, and the impact of account-level decisions on New York Life's overall results. Conduct detailed post-mortems for cancelled cases and translate learnings into future action.
• Pre-Sale and Finalist Support: Actively participate in pre-sale meetings and finalist presentations to articulate the National Account Management philosophy, demonstrate the client experience, and introduce key service partners.
What You'll Bring:
• Bachelor's degree and/or equivalent experience.
• Demonstrated success managing complex client relationships, influencing senior stakeholders, and driving measurable business outcomes. Relevant experience may include National/Large Account Management, Underwriting, Sales, Client Management, or a related discipline.
• Group Life & Health Sales License required.
• Strong working knowledge of the market segment, industry, Group Benefit Solutions products and services, and relevant medical-disability connectivity.
• Strong financial and underwriting acumen, technical knowledge, analytical skills, and presentation capabilities.
• Knowledge of competitor group insurance products, provisions, and market approaches, with the ability to translate New York Life capabilities into differentiated customer value.
• Ability to travel a minimum of 25%.
