About the Role:

Remitly is looking for a Counsel, New Product Initiatives with a background in small and micro business payments, cross-border payments, digital wallets, consumer lending, product development, and consumer protection. You will work with and report to our VP of Legal for New Product Initiatives and our dynamic legal teams based around the world. You will also be part of a supportive, and close knit global business group, establishing a world-class legal function for a fast-growing financial services company. This role is a hybrid position and will require 3 days a week in our Seattle, WA office.

You Will:

  • Support new product strategies and initiatives by providing complex legal advice in a highly regulated and global financial services industry.
  • Advise our product, engineering, design, compliance, and go-to market teams on legal requirements and risks related to modifications of existing products and implementing new financial products. Proactively identify risks and recommend reasonable mitigations.
  • Be comfortable with unclear areas of the law and interpreting and applying the law in new contexts and translate legal advice into actionable guidance for product and business teams that follows our core values.
  • Assist, and work with outside counsel to obtain legal advice in other jurisdictions. If necessary, assist with regulatory interactions and internal audit inquiries.
  • Work collaboratively and develop trusted relationships with business partners and work closely with diverse, highly-talented, and mission-driven cross-functional global teams to drive stakeholder alignment and resolution.
  • Remain up-to-date on all relevant financial services regulations and guidance, industry standards, and consumer protection laws to provide exceptional legal advice.

You Have:

  • J.D. or equivalent.
  • Admitted to, and in good standing with at least one State Bar.
  • Knowledge of consumer prepaid or stored value, payments and money movement, and lending laws is beneficial. Knowledge of the Bank Secrecy Act anti-money laundering regulations is also beneficial, but not required.
  • 6 or more years of experience practicing either in-house, preferably in fintech or bank environments (or in an equivalent setting) or at a reputable law firm, with a focus on financial services and products, including state and federal money transmission, banking, payments, and digital wallets.
  • Understanding of how in-house legal teams work and especially knowledge of fintech-related laws and industry norms.

Compensation Details. The starting base salary range for this position is typically $176,000-$200,000. In the U.S., Remitly employees are shareholders in our Company and equity is part of our total compensation plan.
