Location: Remote
Job Type: Full-Time
Reports To: SVP of Finance

Flipside is a commercialization engine that powers blockchain growth. We activate 180,000+ analysts to produce insights, drive narratives, and transact, building emotional connection and a strong and active community that supports token price and chain growth. We make that possible by curating best-in-class data and making that data available entirely for free.

Founded in 2017, Flipside works with partners such as Solana, Near, Flow, Avalanche, SEI, Aptos, Blast, Vertex. The company is backed by leading investors including Republic Capital, True Ventures, Galaxy Digital, Collab Currency, Hashkey, M13, and more.

Overview:
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Controller to oversee the financial operations of our organization. The Controller will be responsible for managing accounting activities, ensuring compliance with financial regulations, preparing financial reports, and implementing internal controls. This role requires strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams. We are investing, scaling, and building at Flipside, and this role will put you into the middle of our most important growth efforts.

As the company continues to scale in terms of headcount and SaaS clients, our need for back-office help has grown exponentially - which has only been compounded by the rapidly changing regulations and accounting practices for the crypto industry as a whole. The ideal candidate is an enthusiastic problem-solver capable of handling day-to-day accounting needs while also working through complex cryptocurrency transactions; is able to enforce strict adherence to financial controls, and has a penchant for operational accounting excellence.

Responsibilities:

  • Direct the company’s accounting practices and financial reporting, ensuring compliance with the most applicable standards under GAAP / ASC-606 (bonus for SaaS expertise).

  • Maintain full ownership of the General Ledger, including all journal entries and ongoing maintenance of balance sheet schedules, bank/credit reconciliations, etc.

  • Execute on a systematic and timely monthly closing process; produce a financial “package” for internal stakeholders and BOD.

  • Help improve upon existing financial policies and procedures to ensure the highest level of standard for internal controls.

  • Work cross-functionally and collaboratively with stakeholders from the Sales, Customer Success, and Product/Engineering teams.

  • Partner with outside accounting firms to engage in tax planning, yearly filing, ongoing state/federal compliance, and annual audit.

  • Manage the day-to-day accounting operations (AR; AP; Invoicing/Billing; Commissions; Documentation), while simultaneously looking for efficiency improvements.

  • Manage payroll administration in collaboration with the People Ops team.

You possess many of the following attributes:

  • Technical expertise in GAAP-based accounting, with bonus points for in-depth ASC-606 knowledge.

  • Experience creating monthly financial reports that are used by leadership and the Board to make important strategic decisions.

  • Strong business acumen; able to present financial data and insights in a clear, concise, and complete manner.

  • An ability to effectively collaborate with internal stakeholders across different groups/teams to drive great outcomes for the company.

  • Proactive, self-starter that can anticipate needs as the organization grows/scales.

  • Entrepreneurial and enthusiastic attitude; able to deal with the volatility of everyday startup life (particularly in crypto).

  • Familiarity with QuickBooks Online a must; other software such as NetSuite or SaaSOptics a plus.

  • When it comes to startups and accounting, you are: relentless, passionate, authentic, and responsible.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee and manage the accounting department, ensuring accuracy in financial transactions and reporting.

  • Prepare and analyze financial statements, budgets, forecasts, and other financial reports.

  • Develop and maintain internal controls to safeguard company assets and ensure financial integrity.

  • Ensure compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and all relevant tax and financial regulations.

  • Manage the month-end and year-end closing processes.

  • Oversee cash flow management and financial planning to support business operations.

  • Collaborate with external auditors, tax advisors, and regulatory agencies.

  • Provide strategic financial guidance to senior management to drive business growth and profitability.

  • Supervise and mentor accounting staff, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and professional development.

  • Implement and optimize accounting software and financial systems for efficiency.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field (CPA required).

  • 8+ years of experience in accounting, with experience in digital assets in a Web3 company.

  • Experience in fintech and/or payments; particular emphasis on being the SME within a growing fintech product stack.

  • Deep crypto industry experience; full understanding of institutional-grade crypto finance and other tools.

  • Strong knowledge of GAAP, tax regulations, financial reporting standards and regulatory requirements.

  • Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, SAP, NetSuite) and Microsoft Excel.

  • Knowledge of ERP systems and process automation.

  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.

  • Strong leadership and communication skills.

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.

  • Audit experience is required, including working with external auditors and ensuring compliance with financial regulations.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Finance or Accounting.

  • Experience from a Big 4 accounting firm.
