We are hiring an Accounting Lead (Controller) who will own Alt's accounting function while partnering closely with our Head of Finance on strategic financial initiatives. You will build and optimize our accounting infrastructure, establish scalable processes, and serve as a strategic thought partner on complex accounting matters. While operating as our accounting expert, you'll also contribute to broader finance initiatives including FP&A, fundraising support, and strategic projects. This role requires both deep technical expertise and the ability to think strategically about how accounting enables business growth.
Responsibilities:
Day-to-Day Accounting Operations:
Own the monthly and quarterly close process end-to-end, including journal entries, account reconciliations, and variance analysis for key accounts
Manage accounts payable operations from invoice processing to payment runs and vendor management
Coordinate payroll accounting and benefits reconciliation in partnership with HR/payroll providers
Oversee equity administration processes, including stock option tracking, grant approvals, and coordination with external equity plan administrators
Strategic Accounting Leadership:
Serve as the company's accounting expert, advising on complex transactions, new product launches, and business model changes
Design and implement scalable accounting processes to support rapid growth with minimal headcount increase
Partner closely with FP&A on budget variance analysis, unit economics deep-dives, and board reporting materials
Own the accounting systems roadmap, including evaluation and implementation ofERP and spend management solutions
Independently research and apply complex accounting standards such as embedded derivatives and debt facilities
Cross-functional Partnership and Support:
Collaborate with Product, Engineering, and Operations to ensure accurate accounting treatment of strategic initiatives
Support fundraising activities including due diligence, data room management, and investor reporting
Prepare documentation and training materials to enable future team growth and smooth transitions
Compliance and Controls:
Maintain audit readiness and support external auditors with documentation and schedules
Develop and enforce internal controls and accounting policies to safeguard the company’s assets and financial integrity
Qualifications:
7-12 years of progressive accounting experience, including at least 3 years in a lead/manager role
Fintech/marketplace experience required - you understand complex revenue recognition, payment processing, and platform economics
Technical accounting expertise: Proven ability to research and implement complex GAAP guidance independently
Strategic thinking: Experience translating accounting insights into business recommendations
FP&A exposure: Comfortable building financial models, analyzing metrics, and presenting to executives/board
Startup resilience: Thrived in high-growth, resource-constrained environments where you had to build while flying
Technical Skills:
Advanced Excel/Google Sheets modeling capabilities
Experience with modern finance stack (Ramp, Stripe, Rippling, Quickbooks, etc.)
SQL knowledge a plus for data pulls and analysis
Familiarity with BI tools (Metabase, Tableau) for financial reporting
Leadership & Soft Skills:
Self-directed problem solver who can navigate ambiguity without constant guidance
Strong written and verbal communication - able to explain complex accounting to non-finance stakeholders
Project management skills to juggle multiple initiatives while maintaining close timeline
Intellectual curiosity about the business beyond just the numbers
