Lead Product Designer - Job Description

At Conduit Tech, we’re focused on the 10% of all energy use that derives from residential HVAC use. We build tools that enable the clean energy workforce to be more productive and effective - starting with software tools for HVAC pros. By supporting HVAC Pros in designing, selling, and installing high-efficiency HVAC systems, Conduit helps mitigate grid strain, reduce home energy use and enhance occupant comfort. We’re working with over 300 HVAC companies across 35+ US states, generating direct product feedback and revenue.

Role Description

Conduit Tech is looking for a Lead Product Designer to play a critical role in shaping product development at our early stage climate tech startup. Your contributions will be both tactical and strategic, as we discover new ways for our product to redefine the future of residential HVAC. You will collaborate closely with product, engineering, and customer success to deliver end-to-end design solutions that are critical to our success.

As a Lead Product Designer, and design generalist, you will fill many roles including conceiving and conducting user research, early feature discovery, UI/UX design, prototyping and wireframing, and usability testing. As a design lead, you will play a key role in shaping solutions to complex product decisions, using design to guide teams in forming early perspectives as well as iterate on user experience to ensure the product best serves customers.

What you’ll do

  • Lead design efforts for  multidisciplinary teams by using design to uncover and define user experience across multiple surface areas of the product

  • Confront uncertainty and ambiguity to deliver solutions that empower our users and make a genuine impact

  • Take a central role in visual design across the product and supporting areas, from initial concept through implementation and release

  • Design solutions that help scale the product by rendering complex tasks in a way that our users find easy to learn and understand

  • Clearly articulate design rationale to peers and stakeholders, while maintaining an understanding of technical constraints and business goals

  • Facilitate user research interviews and workshops to surface unmet user needs and identify UX shortcomings

  • Craft low and high fidelity prototypes to gain insight and feedback for working hypotheses

You will thrive if you have:

  • A founder mindset: You have the mindset that your work and choices have a large impact on this company, and you are excited to produce excellent work to further Conduit’s mission and grow your equity value.

  • Customer-obsession: You love learning about and from Conduit’s HVAC contractor customers and you care deeply about solving the real problems faced by our customers.

  • The ability to learn quickly: You are willing to dive deeply into the technical domain of Residential and Light Commercial HVAC system design and sales to learn about the work, in-field demands, and pain points.

  • Excellent communication skills: You are adept at structuring written and verbal communication. You care about clarity of thought and team alignment.

  • Bias towards action: You are comfortable moving quickly and iterating quickly as we learn. You work transparently, sharing your work early and often.

  • A growth mindset: You are always looking to learn more and learn faster. You love receiving feedback - and sharing it with your team transparently.

  • Process orientation: You know that great outcomes stem from great processes. You pay attention to executing on those processes with excellence.

  • Empathy: You take care in your communication and behavior to contribute to a culture of compassion, low ego, and humility, even during hectic times.

  • Experience with the early-stage of start-ups: You have an understanding of the nature of the work at an early-stage start-up. The ups and downs of finding product-market fit do not phase you.

Required Skills

  • Proven track record as a design lead, driving initiatives from concept to release

  • Experience with both tablet (iOS/iPadOS) and web design

  • Highly proficient with design tooling (Figma, Miro, Adobe CC, etc.)

  • Experience creating and maintaining design systems

  • Proven understanding of  mobile, touch based,  interaction patterns and design best practices

  • Ability to think strategically about how design integrates into broader product and commercial conversations

  • Experience designing in the presence of technical constraints and working directly with engineering organization

  • Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis. We are unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of employment visas (including H-1B) at this time

Other Details:

  • Starting at $165K-$200K salary range depending on seniority

  • Full time - Remote

  • 3+ years of experience as a Lead Designer
