Are you interested in taxes? Do you want to develop a valuable, specialized tax expertise while working minimal overtime? If so, we may have the job for you! Nova 401(k) Associates and its sister companies need state income tax expertise. Our federal income tax situation is relatively simple, but we file state income tax returns in more than 30 states. We need someone who can support our accounting team by handling our state income tax issues. Internal and external training will be provided.
Responsibilities:
- Support accounting group in gathering data necessary for federal and state income tax returns
- Review state and federal state tax returns prepared by outside CPA, including composite and pass-through entity filings
- Maintain state tax calendars, due date schedules, and compliance logs
- Prepare and reconcile tax accounts, including estimated payments, extensions, composite payments, and overpayment carryforwards
- Coordinate with accounting group to respond to state and local tax notices, inquiries, coordinate with external CPA’s and regulatory agencies as necessary
- Distribute K-1s to shareholders and respond to shareholders questions regarding K-1s
- File renditions for property and personal tax in a handful of jurisdictions and ensure timely payment of property taxes
- File business license renewals, state information returns and local information returns
- Prepare and improve written documentation
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
- 4-year college degree
- At least 2 years of experience with federal income local income taxes
- Prefer candidates with experience on S corporations’ taxes
- Prefer candidates with experience working on state income taxes, particularly California and Texas
- Preparing taxes for service firms or professional firms a plus
- CPA not required. We are unable to provide supervision of CPA candidates.
- Sales tax/indirect tax experience not needed
- While we are open to having this position remote, the selected candidate must be physically present in our Houston home office 5-6 times annually to handle the logistics of filing returns and making tax payments
- Must be able to travel once annually for continuing education
- Ability to be in the Houston home office more often a plus
The pay for this position includes a base of $50,000-$85,000 depending on relevant experience. Bonus compensation will be based on the timeliness and accuracies of returns as well as preparing process documentation.
