PURPOSE OF THE JOB

The Claims Technical Advisor is responsible for driving technical excellence, consistency, and quality across branch offices. The position provides expert-level guidance, delivers targeted technical training, and leads the execution of key initiatives focused on reserve accuracy, litigation avoidance, resolution effectiveness, and operational efficiency. This role partners closely with regional leaders and cross‑functional teams to strengthen claim handling practices, support resolution strategies, enhance technical performance, reduce variation in processes, and support successful adoption of enterprise strategies.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Technical Leadership & Oversight

  • Provides technical guidance and consultation to Claims Professionals,  supervisors, and branch managers.

  • Develops office‑specific action plans focused on identified technical opportunities and KPI gaps.

  • Monitors claim handling quality, trends, and performance metrics to ensure consistent standards across locations.

Training & Capability Development

  • Designs, delivers, and maintains technical training programs targeted to identify technical gaps.

  • Supports new hire onboarding and ongoing skill development for all technical claims staff.

  • Coaches Claims Professionals on file strategy, reserving, valuation, negotiation, and risk assessment.

Strategic Initiative Execution

  • Leads and supports initiatives related to reserve accuracy, resolution strategy, and cycle time reduction.

  • Serves as a subject matter expert for enterprise projects and change management efforts.

  • Ensures consistent adoption of new tools, policies, and workflows across all offices.

Technical Review & Continuous Improvement

  • Conducts targeted technical file reviews to identify trends, root causes, and opportunities to strengthen claim handling practices.

  • Partners with claim leadership to translate observations into practical coaching, training and process improvements.

  • Monitors technical performance indicators and supports leaders in driving consistent claim handling standards across offices.

Cross‑Functional Partnership

  • Collaborates with Cost Containment, Legal, Claims Governance, and other internal partners to align claim strategies, litigation management practices, and technical standards.

  • Supports consistency in litigation strategy, medical management, and overall claim direction.

  • Participates in cross‑functional workgroups to enhance enterprise processes and outcomes.

Accountability & Performance Management

  • Reinforces compliance with best practices, quality standards, and company policies.

  • Ensures transparency of expectations, performance trends, and technical requirements.

  • Provides feedback to leadership regarding capability gaps, resource needs, and improvement opportunities.

  • Maintains and expands technical expertise through ongoing education/development to keep up with the industry’s best practices.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This role has no direct supervisory responsibilities but will provide training and feedback to team members.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree in business or related (or equivalent combination of education/industry experience) required.

  • Minimum 10+ years of workers’ compensation claims experience, including complex claim handling.

  • Experience handling complex California workers’ compensation claims strongly preferred.

  • Prior leadership, training, oversight, or mentorship experience strongly preferred.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

  • Based on jurisdictional requirements, mandated Workers’ Compensation licensing may be required by individual states.   

  • Professional certifications or designations aligned with industry standards (e.g., CPCU, AIC) are strongly preferred

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

  • Advanced understanding of Workers’ Compensation claims principles and application.

  • Deep technical expertise in workers’ compensation claim laws, CT exposure, reserving practices, and settlement strategy.

  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to identify patterns, gaps, and root causes.

  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to influence without formal authority.

  • Proven ability to train, coach, and develop technical staff at all levels.

  • Partnership and collaboration skills across regions and functional departments.

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and drive initiatives to completion.

  • Ability to effectively present information to colleagues and the Leadership Team.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Office environment – no specific or unusual physical or environmental demands and employees are regularly required to sit, walk, stand, talk, and hear.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

This position operates in an office environment and requires the frequent use of a computer, telephone, copier, and other standard office equipment. Travel required 25% of the time.

The current range for this position is

$90,559.93 - $152,723.07

This range is exclusive of fringe benefits and potential bonuses.  If hired at ICW Group, your final base salary compensation will be determined by factors unique to each candidate, including experience, education and the location of the role and considers employees performing substantially similar work.
