About the Role
As an Appian Architect, you will have a unique opportunity to bridge operational mission requirements with scalable low‑code architecture in support of near real‑time situational awareness at the tactical and operational edge. You will play a critical role in designing, implementing, and sustaining resilient Appian‑based workflows and backend services that enable secure data exchange across distributed, contested, and DDIL environments.
In this role, you will be a key contributor to delivering mission‑critical data solutions that integrate low‑code/no‑code (LCNC) platforms, artificial intelligence (AI) services, and external operational systems. You will work closely with cross‑functional engineering teams and mission stakeholders to align Appian architectures with operational objectives, interoperability requirements, and security standards. You will translate operational data‑flow and workflow needs into scalable technical architectures, ensuring that information moves reliably from the tactical edge to shared situational awareness platforms—where and when it is needed most.
Responsibilities
- Design and implement scalable Appian architectures that support mission‑critical workflows, backend services, and data aggregation.
- Lead the development of complex Appian applications within large or enterprise‑scale Appian environments, ensuring maintainability, performance, and scalability.
- Define application structure, data models, security configuration, and performance patterns aligned to operational requirements.
- Architect and develop Appian process models, records, interfaces, and data stores supporting rapid ingestion, validation, and dissemination of operational data.
- Ensure backend workflows are reliable, auditable, resilient, and capable of operating with limited or intermittent connectivity.
- Design solutions that enable Appian to function effectively in disconnected, degraded, intermittent, and limited (DDIL) environments.
- Architect and implement approaches for connecting multiple Appian instances, including forward‑deployed and centrally hosted instances.
- Facilitate secure and efficient data transfer and synchronization between Appian instances and external systems, including conflict‑resolution strategies.
- Design and implement integrations with web APIs, AI services, messaging platforms, and external systems using REST/JSON and other standard methods.
- Collaborate with AI engineers, backend developers, DevSecOps teams, and product stakeholders to deliver end‑to‑end workflows.
- Provide architectural guidance, design reviews, and best‑practice recommendations to Appian development teams.
- Participate in agile ceremonies and support continuous improvement, system evolution, and mission enhancement.

- Proven experience architecting backend-heavy Appian solutions, beyond form centric or UI only workflows.
- Experience designing systems that operate across multiple Appian instances, including synchronization, replication, and data consistency.
- Strong understanding of architectural challenges in DDIL environments, including latency, bandwidth constraints, and intermittent connectivity.
- Hands‑on experience integrating Appian with external systems and web APIs, including authentication, error handling, and performance optimization.
- Experience designing secure and reliable data transfer mechanisms across systems and environments.
- Strong system level thinking, problem solving skills, and the ability to translate operational needs into technical architecture.
- Clear and effective communication skills with both technical and non‑technical stakeholders.
- Active Secret clearance or ability to obtain one.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with mission focused, operational, or situational awareness systems.
