By joining in our shared mission, we will support yours by expanding your personal network and developing skills, whether you are new to the field or an industry thought leader. At Northrop Grumman, you will have the resources, support, and team to do some of the best work of your career.

Northrop Grumman is seeking a Staff Computer Systems Architect to serve as the Business Capability Architect - Mission Focused. The selected candidate will own the current-state and target-state architecture for a combined mission-focused capability portfolio spanning Product Development, Product Support, and Manufacturing Management across the enterprise. This role sits within Strategy and Architecture, part of the Governance & Strategy organization in the Chief Information & Digital Office, and serves as a capability-aligned architecture role spanning organizational boundaries, solution portfolios, and enabling functions rather than a single project or system.

The Mission Focused Business Capability Architect is responsible for guiding capability evolution across engineering and product-development workflows, sustainment and support processes, manufacturing-management operations, and the related data, platforms, and integration patterns required to connect those domains into one coherent capability roadmap rather than disconnected local improvements.

The successful candidate will:

  • own the current-state and target-state architecture for the mission-focused capability portfolio spanning Product Development, Product Support, and Manufacturing Management across organizational and solution boundaries;
  • define capability roadmaps spanning platforms, workflows, data exchanges, operating processes, and modernization initiatives that support mission execution from product development through support and manufacturing outcomes;
  • partner with business, engineering, manufacturing, application, data, technology, security, infrastructure, and delivery stakeholders to improve coherence in mission-focused decisions; and
  • help translate enterprise architecture direction into practical capability priorities, sequencing, and transformation guidance for integrated mission-focused outcomes.

This position will be available as a virtual telecommuter, however, the incumbent most be within 90 miles of a major Northrop Grumman location for ad hoc onsite meetings.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the Business Capability Architect for the combined mission-focused capability portfolio spanning Product Development, Product Support, and Manufacturing Management.
  • Define and maintain the current-state and target-state architecture for the supported mission-focused capabilities across the enterprise.
  • Develop capability roadmaps that span multiple systems, services, products, and initiatives supporting engineering, manufacturing, sustainment, and support functions.
  • Translate enterprise standards, architecture methods, and target-state direction into capability-specific architecture guidance for the supported mission-focused portfolio.
  • Identify dependencies, sequencing needs, reuse opportunities, and trade-offs across engineering, product-data, support, manufacturing, and operational technology-adjacent landscapes.
  • Guide solution and delivery teams so initiatives supporting Product Development, Product Support, and Manufacturing Management advance one coherent target state rather than optimize locally.
  • Partner with stakeholders across Governance & Strategy, Enterprise Applications, Office of the Chief Engineer, manufacturing and operations stakeholders, IT Infrastructure & Operations, CISO & Global Cybersecurity, Insights & Intelligence, and other functions where capability alignment is required.
  • Support enterprise decision-making by clarifying capability outcomes, process implications, data dependencies, integration needs, and operating-model impacts tied to mission-focused modernization.
  • Escalate enterprise-level standards conflicts, investment trade-offs, or cross-capability issues to the Business Architecture Lead and Head of Strategy & Architecture as appropriate.
  • Contribute patterns, lessons learned, and roadmap updates back into the broader architecture practice.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, Business, or related field and 12+ years of relevant experience, or Master’s degree with 10+ years, or PhD with 8+ years.
  • Candidates must have the ability to obtain, and maintain, a U.S. Government Secret level security clearance as a condition of continued employment.
  • Strong experience in architecture for business capabilities, product lifecycle environments, engineering or manufacturing ecosystems, sustainment or support processes, or complex cross-functional portfolios.
  • Demonstrated ability to work across organizational boundaries and connect target-state design to delivery planning and operational outcomes.
  • Experience creating roadmaps, patterns, and architecture guidance across multiple solutions, systems, products, or services.
  • Strong stakeholder-management and influence skills across business, engineering, operations, and technology organizations.
  • Ability to operate as both strategist and practical architectural guide for a capability area spanning multiple related business capabilities.
  • Experience in regulated, security-conscious, or compliance-driven environments.
  • Knowledge of TOGAF ADM or other Architecture Frameworks
  • Strong knowledge of the Aerospace and Defense business domain

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior experience in enterprise, business, domain, or capability architecture roles.
  • Experience supporting product development, engineering data management, sustainment, service or logistics support, manufacturing operations, production planning, or related mission-oriented processes.
  • Experience in defense, aerospace, federal, or similarly regulated environments.
  • Experience mentoring delivery architects while maintaining common architecture standards.
  • Ability to connect business capability planning with operational execution, modernization investments, and end-to-end mission outcomes.
  • Experience working with matrixed stakeholders across engineering, operations, cybersecurity, applications, infrastructure, and analytics functions.

We offer flexible work arrangements, phenomenal learning opportunities, exposure to a wide variety of projects and customers, and a very friendly team environment.  At Northrop Grumman, we are on the cutting edge of innovation.  Our diverse portfolio of programs means there are endless paths to cultivating your career.  We also offer exceptional benefits/healthcare, a 9/80 work schedule option, and a great 401k matching program. Come join us!
