The role involves generating leads through outbound prospecting, qualifying leads, maintaining CRM hygiene, and collaborating with Sales and Marketing. Ideal for individuals eager to grow in a startup environment, focusing on payments and fintech.
About Us
At Butter Payments, we’re on a mission to eliminate involuntary churn and make recurring payments seamless. Every year, billions of dollars are lost due to failed payments. Butter leverages machine learning, deep financial data partnerships, and behavioral insights to ensure the right payments go through at the right time—without friction. We're backed by world-class investors like Atomic & Norwest Venture Partners, and we're growing fast.
The Role
We’re looking for someone who is still building their sales craft — someone who wants coaching, feedback, and repetition, and is excited to grow within a structured sales motion. The ideal BDR / SDR has prior exposure to payments or fintech and is eager to learn, execute, and help build the foundation of Butter Payments’ sales organization. This role is ideal for someone 1–2 years out of college who wants hands-on experience in outbound prospecting, inbound qualification, and the operational mechanics behind a high-performing revenue team in a regulated, technical sales environment.
This is a true startup role. You’ll prospect, qualify, experiment with messaging, maintain clean data, and help shape the sales processes that will scale with the company. We’re less focused on polish and more focused on hiring a driven, curious generalist who understands the basics of payments or fintech and is excited to do the work.
Key Responsibilities
Lead Generation & Pipeline Development
- Own outbound prospecting across email, LinkedIn, and phone to generate qualified meetings
- Research and identify target accounts, decision-makers, and buyer personas within Butter’s ICP
- Qualify inbound leads based on business model, payment needs, compliance considerations, and readiness to buy
- Book meetings and hand off well-qualified opportunities to Account Executives
- Consistently hit activity and pipeline generation targets
Sales Operations & Process Support
- Maintain CRM hygiene (lead and account creation, enrichment, activity logging, stage accuracy)
- Support lead routing, scoring, and follow-up workflows
- Track outreach performance, conversion rates, and pipeline metrics
- Help document and improve SDR/BDR playbooks, sequences, and messaging
- Partner with Sales leadership to identify process gaps and efficiency opportunities
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Work closely with Marketing on campaigns, inbound leads, and messaging alignment
- Provide feedback on lead quality, objections, and market insights from payments-focused conversations
- Support testing and iteration across outreach channels, messaging, and targeting
What Success Looks Like (First 6–12 Months)
- Consistently generating qualified pipeline that converts to closed revenue
- Strong understanding of Butter Payments’ product, ICP, and payments buyer personas
- Ability to speak confidently about payments workflows, pricing, and common objections
- Clean, reliable CRM data that leadership can trust for forecasting and decision-making
- Improved SDR/BDR processes that scale as volume and team size grow
- Becoming a trusted partner to Sales, Marketing, and Revenue leadership
Qualifications
Required
- 1–2 years of professional experience (excluding internships and fellowships)
- Experience in payments, fintech, financial services, or a payments-adjacent SaaS company
- Undergraduate degree from a top U.S. university
- Strong work ethic and willingness to hustle—effort and consistency matter in this role
- Interest in sales, fintech, and building revenue teams at an early-stage company
- Comfort reaching out to new prospects via email, LinkedIn, and phone
- Highly organized with strong attention to detail
- Coachable, curious, and open to feedback
- Clear written and verbal communication skills
Nice to Have
- Direct experience selling or supporting payment products (e.g., card processing, BNPL, embedded finance, billing, fraud, or payouts)
- Experience using CRM and sales tools (HubSpot, Salesforce, Apollo, etc.)
- Experience in a startup or fast-paced environment
- Desire to grow into roles such as Account Executive, Sales Ops, or Revenue Ops
Why Butter Payments
- Early-career opportunity to build a fintech sales career at a growing startup
- Hands-on mentorship and exposure to the full payments sales lifecycle
- Opportunity to help build systems and processes from scratch
- High ownership and visibility—your work directly impacts revenue growth
- Clear growth path for strong performers
We are focused on building a diverse and inclusive workforce. If you’re excited about this role, but do not meet 100% of the qualifications listed above, we encourage you to apply.
