Position Summary

The Algorithm R&D Group at Iontra is seeking a Battery Algorithm Engineer with strong expertise in electrochemistry, mathematical modeling, and algorithm development for lithium-ion and emerging battery technologies. This person will design, implement, and optimize charging, discharging, and state-estimation algorithms to advance Iontra’s battery performance capabilities. The role requires hands-on data analysis, modeling, and simulation work, as well as collaboration with software, hardware, and test engineering teams to translate research outcomes into product-ready solutions.
Your work will directly impact Iontra’s mission to deliver safer, faster-charging, and longer-lasting batteries for applications ranging from consumer electronics to electric vehicles and grid storage.

What You’ll Be Doing:

  • Further develop lithium-ion battery charging and discharging strategies within the company’s existing algorithm framework and evaluate the impact of various strategies on battery aging.
  • Collaborate closely with the embedded systems and software teams to enhance the fuel gauge (SOC/SOH) estimation algorithms within the company’s established framework and integrate these algorithms with charging/discharging strategies into the battery management system (BMS) implemented on chips, to meet customer product requirements.
  • Design and executed experiments with Iontra’s battery cyclers (Deimos and Phobos) to validate algorithm performance.
  • Optimize the company’s existing cell characterization methods and extract and analyze large sets of test data.
  • Work closely with cross-functional teams (Analytics, hardware, embedded software) to bring R&D concepts into production-ready code.
  • Contribute technical documentation, patents and design reviews.

You’ll Need These Qualifications:

  • MS or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Applied Physics, or related field.
  • 2–5 years of experience in battery modeling, control algorithms, or related areas (academic or industry).
  • Strong understanding of battery fundamentals (electrochemistry, degradation mechanisms, thermal behavior).
  • Expertise in mathematical modeling and control theory applied to dynamic systems.
  • Proficiency in MATLAB and Python for modeling, simulation, and algorithm development.
  • Solid foundation in statistics and data analysis for experimental validation.
  • Experience implementing and debugging algorithms using test equipment and large datasets.
  • Familiarity with machine learning approaches applied to battery performance and lifetime prediction.

Desired Qualifications (or ability to develop)

  • Experience with embedded systems (C/C++), real-time control, and firmware integration.
  • Knowledge of Kalman Filters, Extended Kalman Filters, Particle Filters or advanced estimation methods.
  • Exposure to AWS services (SageMaker, Lambda, Athena, Quicksight) for large-scale data handling.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills, including ability to present technical work to cross-functional teams.

You’ll love this job if you:

  • Are driven to be part of a team doing big things to help our planet.
  • Aspire to work with a successful veteran startup management team.
  • Are a self-starter and always find ways to get your work done and help team members.
  • Are an organized, detail-oriented person being very good at time management.
  • Are determined and resilient to keep things moving forward at a startup pace.
  • Are assertive and able to influence and partner with the team to get things done.
  • Enjoy new challenges and change.

Benefits and Compensation:

Salary Range: $140k - $155k  (salary is based on education, experience, skillset, and market value).

We offer the following benefits package:

  • Health Care Plan (Medical, Dental & Vision)
  • Life Insurance (Basic, Voluntary & AD&D)
  • Short Term & Long-Term Disability
  • Paid Time Off (Vacation, Sick & Holidays)
  • 401(k) Retirement Plan plus company match
