Addendum: This leadership role supports the Underwriting Performance organization for the Commercial Lines and Excess/Surplus & Specialty business, focused on delivering data and insights that drive improved outcomes across Underwriting Planning Units. This role includes accountability for shaping actionable portfolio monitoring and analysis for the CLESS portfolio, influencing third-party data strategy, and working with key partners across the underwriting analytics value chain. Key experiences include a proven track record of leading teams of people to deliver actionable insights, the aptitude to shape and execute on a longer-term strategy, and the ability to tell stories with data.

Job Description Summary

Works directly with Commercial Lines and E&S/S (CLESS) Underwriting senior leaders to provide the most critical and complex data solutions. Ultimately responsible for creating, packaging, and communicating to senior leadership high quality, easily interpreted data, analytics, and insights in support of strategic CLESS business needs.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Partners with P&C senior business leaders to understand the business, data needs, and strategies. Provide guidance and oversite in formulating data solution design ideas and encapsulating like needs across the customer base. Consults with P&C senior business partners to understand, align, and deliver data/reporting work that supports business strategies. Influences to provide innovative and creative data solutions to business problems.  This includes accountability for project execution, change management and communication, culture development and transformation, as well as future initiatives.

  • Manages P&C senior business partner expectations by guiding the team to complete data/reporting work proactively and consistently through communication, adhering to uniform data quality and documentation standards, and delivering operational reporting in a timely manner.  Partner with P&C senior business partners to establish and adhere to SLA framework and commitments.  Influences P&C senior leaders on full portfolio of work and establishes priority within that portfolio, as a trusted advisor. 

  • Ensures that the team delivers on the most complex and critical P&C data solutions involving multiple disciplines and functional areas within P&C Business Information and external teams (ex: Advanced Analytics, EDO), which may impact multiple P&C business units. Collaborate closely with Business Data Management team and other cross-team members to provide holistic, simple, and inventive solutions. 

  • Ultimately responsible for creating, packaging, and communicating to P&C senior leadership high quality, easily interpreted data and information solutions to support strategic P&C business needs.  Responsible for consistency and continuity of all work performed by the team, including cross-team matrixes.

  • Monitors overall partner satisfaction, progress of all ongoing work and projects, and process improvement in order to improve service delivery.

  • Oversees the process of P&C data extraction from databases, tables, data warehouses, and other sources to support operational reporting. Determines the level of information needed based on customer needs and data availability.

  • Lead the team to strategically support the research, analysis and presentation of information to P&C business partners by:  monitoring external sources, creating custom reports, compiling and summarizing information, producing supporting documentation and exhibits, and verification of information received from external sources.

  • Oversees the preparation of reports and use of information systems, software and related sources of information. Oversees the training of other users on report preparation and data base access.

  • Oversees associate management including performance management, salary planning and administration, training and development, workflow and organization planning, day-to-day management, hiring and placement, and disciplinary actions for direct and possibly indirect reports. 

Reporting RelationshipsReports to VP, Underwriting Data & Insights Commercial, E&S and Specialty CL Data and Insights . 3-5 direct reports 30-50 indirect reports.  

 

Typical Skills and Experiences  

 

Education: Undergraduate studies in computer science, management information, business, mathematics or related field.  Graduate studies are preferred.  Significant insurance related studies gained by technical insurance designation is preferred.

 

Experience: A minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in planning, designing and implementing P&C-specific financial and operational measurement initiatives. Experience with influencing senior leaders through problem solving. Extensive experience leading large, multi-layered teams.

 

Knowledge, Abilities and Skills: Key skills include strategic agility, dealing with ambiguity, critical thinking, P&C business acumen, organizational agility, strong problem-solving abilities, and executive presence.  Selected candidate must have excellent communication/collaboration skills and the ability to clearly articulate a vision for the future across a broad spectrum of audiences. Must have expert knowledge of standards, best practices, methodologies, and frameworks associated with the insurance/financial services industry, business process management, and the IT discipline.  Must have expert knowledge of a wide variety of tools, concepts, and techniques of financial and operational measurement, analysis, and design.  Understanding of new technologies and developments in the technology industry and their application to the P&C environment.  Extensive knowledge of project management concepts and techniques are required.  Expert knowledge of facilitation, performance management, organizational design, and organization change management.  Must have expertise and the ability to coach and mentor others in building business partnerships, influence, providing timely and relevant information for decision making, leading change, business transformation planning, and the ability to translate findings into actionable communications.  

 

Other criteria, including leadership skills, competencies and experiences may take precedence. 

Staffing exceptions to the above must be approved by the hiring manager’s leader and Human Resource Business Partner.

The national salary range for AVP, P&C Business Insights : $143,000.00-$283,000.00

The expected starting salary range for AVP, P&C Business Insights : $151,000.00 - $253,000.00
