Assistant Professor, History

The Department of History, Anthropology, and Classics at Butler University invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor in Latin American history starting in August 2027. We seek a Latin American historian with an innovative and potentially interdisciplinary approach to the discipline. We are particularly interested in candidates whose teaching and research complement and expand the department’s existing areas of expertise and course offerings. 

Areas of teaching or research  expertise may include, but are not limited to Indigenous/Afro-Indigenous histories; diasporic studies; medicine and public health; material culture; environmental studies; gender studies, economic history; and political history. We welcome candidates whose scholarship engages multiple fields, methodologies or approaches and can create synergies across the Department, College, and University.

We value candidates committed to  infusing critical and intersectional perspectives into their teaching and scholarship,  directing undergraduate research and internships, and supporting  community-engaged learning. Candidates should also demonstrate a commitment to fostering an inclusive learning environment for an increasingly diverse student population. The letter of application and/or teaching statement should address the candidate's record of or commitment to student success, inclusive pedagogy, belonging, access, and learners with  varied educational backgrounds and life experiences.

Responsibilities

. 

This is a tenure-track position with a 3/3 teaching load. The successful candidate will contribute to a collaborative, innovative, and student-centered teaching culture. They will teach courses in Latin American history at the introductory and upper levels and contribute to the department’s broader curriculum. Candidates should be able to teach with chronological depth. Depending on their area of expertise and departmental needs, the successful candidate may contribute to courses in world history, historiography, and the University’s Core Curriculum. 

In addition to teaching, the successful candidate will be expected to maintain an active research agenda, especially one that opens up possibilities for students to engage in the research process. Candidates will also be expected to contribute to departmental and university service appropriate to their career stage.

• 1-2 page teaching philosophy, especially regarding a commitment to fostering an inclusive learning environment
• Transcripts from all accredited colleges or university attended (unofficial acceptable at this stage)
• A list of 3-5 references, including name, title, and contact information (shortlisted candidates will be asked to provide three letters of recommendation).

Shortlisted candidates will be asked to provide the following additional documents:

• Evidence of teaching excellence (e.g., evaluations and/or course observation letters; syllabi of courses taught and/or future courses; awards or recognitions if applicable). 
• A writing sample (e.g., journal article, book chapter, dissertation chapter, etc.)

Finalists will be required to submit official transcripts and to undergo a background check.

Housed in Butler University's College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the Department of History, Anthropology, and Classics currently has fourteen full-time faculty who serve a growing and diverse population of students.
