Overview
The Assistant General Counsel (USA) directly influences the long-term success of Compassion International by serving as an advisor to members of the General Counsel Office and key executive leaders, providing proactive and specialized counsel and expertise on matters including commercial and transactional legal matters, developments in the law, managing outside counsel and providing international leadership with proactive legal and business advice in their individual contexts. This position may reside at Compassion’s global ministry center in Colorado Springs or at a remote location within the United States. The responsibilities include management of legal matters, management of litigation, provision of advice to the business on business and risk matters, collaboration with and management of outside counsel, support of Compassion’s investigations process , and partnering with key ministry stakeholders to achieve global strategies and objectives. The incumbent collaborates with senior leaders and contributes to the development of functional strategy and makes decisions based on operational strategy and priorities.
What will you do?
- Maintain a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Is a consistent witness for Jesus Christ, maintains a courteous, Christ-like attitude in dealing with people within and outside of Compassion, and faithfully upholds Compassion’s ministry in prayer.
- Act as an advocate for children. Understand and advance Christ's mandate to protect children. Raise awareness of the needs of children and takes active steps to help protect against neglect, abuse, and exploitation of children. Promote the dignity, respect, positive treatment, potential of children in all circumstances. Encourage the involvement of others in helping children in need. Report and appropriately support responses to incidents of harm of children if they occur.
- Uphold and engage in Compassion’s core Cultural Behaviors.
- Provide leadership, planning and consultation to executives, and peer management in the successful alignment of assigned department resources to ensure achievement of operational priorities and initiatives, integrating priorities within organizational strategies to ensure that department's purpose is fulfilled.
- Work collaboratively and cross-functionally to develop, execute and manage strategic and complex policies, procedures and systems that align with legal obligations and compliance requirements, and are resilient to changes in business practices, regulations and expectations. Also lead cross-functional teams that evaluate and proactively improve programs across the ministry.
- Monitor rapidly changing laws and regulations and assess impact to the ministry. Likewise, identify major risks and exposures and work collaboratively in leading teams that determine the causes of major, complex issues and create and implement procedures to halt future incidents.
- Develop training materials and other communications to increase employee understanding of policies, practices and procedures and legal obligations.
- Develop and maintain strategic projects and program documentation, including notices, policies, procedures, compliance requirements and guidelines.
- Manage conflicts between law and organization objectives and ensure ongoing compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
- Collaborate with outside counsel by communicating objectives, providing strategic direction, and providing ongoing information and support to strengthen Compassion’s objectives and principles.
- Partner with Legal team colleagues, when required, to support contract negotiations which include security and privacy concerns.
- Frequently coaches, provides expertise, and may oversee the work of other professionals and support staff in the department or division.
What do you bring?
- Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school, with active U.S. state bar admission
- Bachelor’s degree in Legal Studies, Business, Risk Management, or a related field
- Minimum 10 years of legal experience, including 7+ years specializing in employment law
- Must reside in the United States and be currently licensed to practice law
- Demonstrates high emotional intelligence, adaptability, and a personable approach to collaboration
