About this role:
Wells Fargo is seeking a Secured Lending Underwriting Director (Underwriting Manager) for the Asset Based Lending Underwriting team, this position will oversee the Central Region and our nationwide focus on financing growing Emerging Middle Market clients. Clients include public companies, private equity groups, and privately owned businesses across a variety of industries and asset classes with a financing need of $5MM to $500MM+. This individual is expected to work closely with our Commercial Banking and other product lines of businesses to build strong relationships and enhance credit and other economic opportunities with prospective customers. The Underwriting Manager manages a geographically diverse team of professionals to support the origination and portfolio functions by focusing on structuring, underwriting, and closing of Asset Based Loans through loan funding. In addition to transactional support, the Underwriting Manager is also responsible for talent development. The individual is an experienced negotiator, underwriter, and loan closer with comprehensive product and industry knowledge.
In this role, you will:
  • Effectively manage a team that performs business, financial, collateral, and industry analysis, which result in consistent, high quality new loan underwritings.
  • Maintain equal focus on managing the underwriting and closing of deals in all of our product segments while ensuring that we consider the differing requirements/cost considerations of customers in these respective segments.
  • Work with business development to help win and close transactions while at the same time maintaining an appropriate balance between growth and risk, particularly to build-out growth initiatives where risk may be unique to a market segment.
  • Focus on customer service as the highest priority.
  • Collaborate with and influence all levels of professionals, including experienced leadership.

  • Serve as a subject matter expert on various work streams and special projects as required from time-to-time.
  • Actively contribute to Wells Fargo meeting its financial goals. Measures include revenue growth, client acquisition/retention, managing client losses, minimize operating losses and expense management. Improve the quality of our earnings through continued focus on ROE guidelines and collaborating with our internal partners to explore and execute on ancillary business opportunities that customers will find beneficial and meet their needs.
Required Qualifications:
  • 8+ years of Secured Lending Underwriting experience, or equivalent demonstrated through one or a combination of the following: work experience, training, military experience, education
  • 4+ years of management or leadership experience
Desired Qualifications:
  • Asset based lending experience
  • Experience with financing private equity owned firms and mergers and acquisitions
  • Significant customer facing experience
  • Cross-border lending experience
  • Significant secured lending legal loan documentation and negotiation experience of complex transactions
  • Understanding of capital markets structures, documentation, and risk drivers

Base Salary Range
  • Chicago, Illinois: $185,000.00-$300,000.00 Annually
Salary range is determined by location of the job. May be considered for a discretionary bonus, Restricted Share Rights, or other long-term incentive awards.

Salary is just one component of Wells Fargo's total rewards package. Depending on the role, a Wells Fargo's employee may be eligible for additional forms of compensation, such as sales incentives, discretionary bonuses, and/or equity in the company in the form of Restricted Stock Units (RSUs).
