Because we believe it is our collective responsibility to uplift our fellow Rhode Islanders when and where we can, our associates receive additional paid time to volunteer.

Why this job matters:

APIs are critical products that power integrations across teams and partners. This role sits at the intersection of engineering, security, and product, helping ensure APIs are usable, secure, and production‑ready. Following an initial onboarding period, interns can choose one or more focus areas based on interests and need. Your work directly improves API quality, speeds up integrations, and supports real production systems.

What you will do:

  • Create, maintain, and improve API documentation, including reference docs, data dictionaries, examples, and onboarding guides
  • Build and maintain developer-facing assets such as Postman collections, executable examples, and quickstarts.
  • Leverage AI tools (Copilot) to accelerate creation of SDKs, sample applications, code snippets, and other developer tools
  • Use effective prompting techniques to generate, refine, and iterate on developer documentation and tooling (prompting experience a plus)
  • Validate documentation and samples against real API behavior and close gaps between implementation and docs
  • Work hands-on with API tooling and platforms (e.g., API gateways, DevOps pipelines, testing tools)
  • Participate in **API design reviews, code reviews, and standards audits** to improve consistency and quality
  • Test APIs and integrations; identify defects, usability issues, and improvement opportunities
  • Apply **API security best practices (e.g., OWASP Top 10, OAuth concepts) in testing, documentation, and reviews
  • Translate technical findings into user stories, acceptance criteria, and backlog items**
  • Support Agile product activities such as backlog grooming and sprint reviews
  • Help improve developer experience and onboarding, reducing time to integrate and adopt APIs
  • Collaborate directly with engineers, architects, and product managers on real production systems
  • Contribute to small, well-scoped coding tasks, technical debt, or sample code where appropriate

What you need to succeed:

  • Basic understanding of APIs and REST concepts (how requests and responses work)
  • Interest in testing and validating APIs, using tools like Postman
  • Ability to create or improve technical documentation such as API docs, examples, or guides
  • Attention to detail and ability to spot gaps, inconsistencies, or quality issues
  • Familiarity with basic API security concepts (OAuth, OWASP Top 10) at a conceptual level
  • Curiosity about how developers use APIs and what makes a good developer experience
  • Willingness to gather feedback and think about APIs as products, not just endpoints
  • Comfort working with user stories, backlogs, and Agile teams
  • Clear communication skills and confidence asking questions early
  • Ability to collaborate with engineers, product managers, and other stakeholders
  • Willingness to learn new tools and technologies quickly
  • Self‑motivated, adaptable, and able to work independently with guidance

Location:
BCBSRI is headquartered in downtown Providence, conveniently located near the train station and bus terminal. We actively support associate well-being and work/life balance and offer the following schedules, based on role:

  • In-office: onsite 5 days per week
  • Hybrid: onsite 2-4 days per week
  • Remote: onsite 0-1 days per week. Permitted to reside in the following states, pending approval from the Human Resources Department: Arizona, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Massachusetts, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Texas, Virginia

Our culture of belonging at Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island (BCBSRI) is at the core of all we do, and it strengthens our ability to meet the challenges of today’s healthcare industry. BCBSRI is an equal opportunity employer.
