The role – what you’ll do

Barr is seeking a senior AI consultant to join our Digital Solutions team. This senior consulting role is responsible for building Barr’s AI-enabled consulting services. The senior AI consultant defines how Barr applies artificial intelligence and data analytics to deliver value in environmental consulting and engineering projects.

Working closely with the business unit leadership, the director of project technology, and project leaders, this person will shape service offerings, develop go-to-market strategies, and drive business growth for AI-related services. This role bridges technical innovation with client delivery, leveraging Barr’s existing AI and data science expertise while concentrating on market impact, client engagement, and service development.

Your impact - key responsibilities

  • Service offering development and practice leadership: define and develop AI-driven consulting services that complement Barr’s core engineering and environmental offerings. Identify areas where AI/ML can solve client challenges and create structured service packages around these solutions.

  • Business development and market positioning: proactively identify client needs and market opportunities for AI-enhanced consulting. Work with project teams and principals to qualify opportunities where Barr can introduce AI solutions. Craft value propositions and proposal content that articulate the business benefits of our AI offerings in clear, client-focused terms.

  • Drive go-to-market strategy for AI services: develop marketing materials, case studies, and thought leadership pieces that position Barr as an innovative, tech-savvy partner in our industry. Participate in industry events or client workshops to showcase Barr’s capabilities.

  • Client engagement and solution strategy: engage with clients to understand their strategic objectives, pain points, and data and technology environment. Design high-level solution approaches that effectively apply AI to meet client-specific needs, scoping out how our services will be delivered.

  • Collaboration with technical teams: leverage Barr’s existing technical talent in AI, data science, and software development. Collaborate with our data scientists, engineers, and IT specialists to implement the technical aspects of AI solutions. Your role is to translate client requirements into clear tasks for the technical team and best ensure that the team’s capabilities are effectively packaged to meet client needs.

  • Practice growth and management: monitor the pipeline of opportunities, proposal hit rates, project profitability, and overall ROI of this practice area. Use these metrics to refine strategy, for example, adjusting service offerings, targeting new market segments, or shifting pricing models to improve margins. Collaborate with Barr’s leadership to identify resource needs as the practice expands.

About the opportunity

  • Hybrid: a hybrid work arrangement may be considered for this position. A hybrid work arrangement refers to splitting time worked between a Barr office and a home office. This position can be based out of any of Barr's U.S. anchor offices.

  • Travel expectation: up to 25% for business development and visits to other Barr offices and clients. Amount of travel may vary depending on the location the candidate is based out of.

About you – required core competencies

  • Consulting experience and industry knowledge: 10+ years of experience in consulting or professional services, with a significant portion in roles involving business development, service line leadership, or practice management. Proven track record of expanding existing services and/or developing new services or markets and driving revenue growth.

  • Strategic business acumen: Demonstrated ability to think strategically about services and markets. Skilled at identifying emerging client needs and turning them into business opportunities. Experience crafting go-to-market strategies or business plans for new initiatives, including defining offerings, pricing, and delivery approach. Solid understanding of consulting economics and the ability to help ensure the profitability of projects and services. Entrepreneurial mindset with a focus on results and value creation.

  • Client engagement and sales skills: exceptional communication and interpersonal skills. Comfortable engaging with client executives and decision-makers. Strong presentation and negotiation skills, able to lead proposal efforts and differentiate Barr’s offerings from competitors. A record of building trusted client relationships and delivering client satisfaction, especially when introducing new capabilities or ways of working.

  • Leadership and collaboration: effective at leading cross-functional efforts without formal authority. Able to influence and motivate teams to rally around new ideas. Experience coordinating diverse teams (technical experts, consultants, business developers) to deliver a unified service.

  • AI literacy and innovation mindset: strong familiarity with modern AI and data analytics concepts and their business applications. While deep technical development skills are not the primary focus of this role, the candidate must be conversant in AI/ML capabilities and stay informed about trends that impact our industry.

  • Driver’s license: possession of a current, valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record.

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for sponsorship by Barr, now or in the future.

Helpful additional experience (not required)

  • Advanced education: graduate degree, such as an MBA or a master’s degree in a relevant technical field, or both.

  • Domain expertise: experience in the environmental, engineering, or industrial sectors that Barr serves (e.g., water resources, energy, manufacturing, mining).

  • Practice building achievements: previous success in launching or growing a consulting practice or service line.

  • Thought leadership and network: recognized involvement in industry forums or professional networks related to technology and consulting.

  • Adaptability and change management: demonstrated ability to drive change in an organization.

Compensation: Anticipated range of $130,000–$180,000 annually. Compensation will vary based on relevant experience, education, skill level, and other compensable factors.
