About the Position:

Williamsburg Adventures Substitutes are outdoor and leadership enthusiasts who support Adventures Guides or Leads in one of our Adventures courses in Colorado. Students in this course will earn PE credit for participating in activities like rock climbing, hiking, skiing, survival skills, first-aid, outdoor games, and more. Students will earn elective leadership credit for activities such as attending museums, visiting colleges, going on field trips, doing service projects, and applying leadership skills in simulations and various activities.
Adventure Substitutes will be responsible for the following:
Assist with Facilitating Transformational Learning Experiences
- Adventures Substitutes will be trained on the Williamsburg Adventures formula for infusing each experience with meaning.
- Adventures Substitutes need to be comfortable participating in 1:1 and group discussions and processing before, during, and after an activity.
- Adventures Substitutes are required to attend all online and in-person training as a requirement of this position. A schedule of training will be provided in advance of the school year.
Inspire, Challenge, and Engage Students
- Adventures Substitutes serve as partners to Adventures Leads at each event. There are 10 adventures per semester held on predetermined Fridays. Most adventures take place between school hours (9 am - 3 pm MT) and typically run for two to five hours at various locations.
- Adventures Substitutes may be asked to guide students, lead discussions, take attendance, and/or administer first aid.
- Adventures Substitutes are expected to arrive 30 minutes before the start of the adventure and help clean up and care for equipment
Follow the Direction of Adventures Guides or Leads to Ensure Student Safety
- Adventures courses will involve large groups of students.
- Adventures Substitutes will support Adventures Leads in their responsibility to oversee the safety of students at all times between drop-off and pick-up.
- Adventures Substitutes report to the Adventures Leads in each respective geographical area.
Represent WL in Positive Manner During all Activities/Trips
- Adventures Substitutes should conduct themselves in such a way as they earn the full trust of the group by serving as a role model to students and fostering a sense of belonging between students at each adventure.
- Adventures Substitutes extend their influence and contribute to a sense of community.
Minimum Qualifications
- Minimum of 18 years old AND 1 full year post-high-school
- Outdoor and leadership experience preferred
- Valid and current driver’s license
- Excellent administrative skills (planning, organizing, communication)
- Provide transformational mentoring to youth
- Be vulnerable and authentic
- Show energy and enthusiasm for being in the outdoors and challenging oneself in various settings
- Pass background check
- Adventures Substitutes may be asked to use various programs (for example, Student Information Systems (SIS), Zoom, Google Suite), you will be trained on any needed for this position
Ability to:
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous Williamsburg Adventures experience.
- Experience working with students in grades 6-12.
Physical Abilities
- This position requires physical agility and stamina.
- Walking, hiking, running, standing, lifting, and bending will be a routine part of this position.
- Employees will need to be able to keep visual cues on students and be able to hear them.
- Adventures Substitutes must have the physical ability to lead students safely on adventures in various settings.
Compensation & Schedule
- Pay rate is $21 per hour, including training and preparation time.
- Mileage reimbursement for traveling to and from Adventures.
- This is a part-time, as-needed position. Adventures are held on scheduled Fridays. Most adventures 2-5 hours in length. The typical time spent per week for the position will typically be under 5 hours as a Substitute.
- There may be short training held each semester on predetermined Fridays that you may be asked to participate in and it is paid
