Do you ever wonder what the Internet thinks about things? Okay, so the Internet isn’t a person with its own opinions, but in a lot of ways it acts as a repository for all our individual thoughts and beliefs. Together, when mined correctly, that information can tell us a lot about where we are as a planet.
A Boulder-based company called 30dB has come up with a product that helps make sense of all that web sentiment.
From a user standpoint, 30dB's service is simple. You type in a subject and the site generates the Internet's opinion — be it positive or negative. It will tell you what words or phrases it is picking up to gather those opinions, and offer you suggestions to fine-tune your search. All this information comes in a customizable infographic that can be embedded into a media report or blog post.
Since we happen to run a website, we thought it would be fun to use 30dB to get the vibe on some of today's hot topics.
Caitlyn Jenner
Caitlyn Jenner has been a hot topic of discussion on social media since her Vanity Fair cover was released yesterday. And while we all knew she was being discussed, I bet you didn’t know that 62 percent of posts have been supportive.
Interestingly, Drake Bell, who has been trending on Facebook and Twitter since tweeting ‘sorry... still going to call you Bruce’ is trending 62% negative. Oops.
Sepp Blatter
The embattled head of international soccer stepped down today amid allegations of all sorts of corruption. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the Internet is pretty united (75%) in their distaste for Blatter. Driving the vibe are words like ‘corruption,’ ‘scandal,’ and ‘crisis.’
For the last week Blatter has actually been less popular than the Islamic State.
Marc Cuban
Tech titan Marc Cuban isn’t so popular either. 64% of opinions about Cuban were negative, with terms like ‘cries,’ ‘a pain in,’ and ‘fed up’ all ranking highly. Apparently money can't buy you love.
Mayor Michael Hancock
Denver’s Mayor Michael Hancock is a popular man. 78% of things people had to say about him online were positive. Words associated with Mayor Hancock included: ‘honorable,’ ‘strong,’ and ‘win.’ An enviable outcome for any politician.
Anthony Sodd
As popular as Mayor Hancock is, the most popular thing on the Internet I could find was... myself! Sure, it's only pulling from two sources, but they were both positive.
