Colorado moved up big-time in CNBC’s rankings of the best states in the country for business. Climbing ahead 4 spots from last year, Colorado clinched the number 4 spot in this year’s rankings. Which, if you think about it, puts us in the top 8 percent of states – not too shabby.

Every year CNBC ranks the 50 states according to 60 different business and economic metrics. This year, Colorado scored 1,515 points out 2,500 – which would be a low D if this were a test. Luckily it’s not, and that score puts us well ahead of the vast majority of states.

Colorado received high marks in the study for its strong job growth and an unemployment rate below the national average. It was hurt by a relatively high cost of doing business (we were are 36th most expensive state) and a slightly above average cost of living.

On the plus side, the study says that we have fantastic access to capital (#8), live a great quality of life (#9), and – believe it or not – have some of the best transportation infrastructure in the country (#14). Given the size of potholes around town, I’m guessing that last metric wasn’t well researched.

The best state in the country for business was Minnesota, followed by Texas, Utah, Colorado and Georgia.
