Boulder-based Sovrn announced earlier this week that it acquired Proper Media to continue helping publishers increase their revenue and better understand their audiences.

Founded in 2014, Sovrn helps online publishers and content creators grow their audiences, engage with readers and monetize their content through a suite of advertising and analytics tools. The company works with thousands of customers across 40,000 websites to reach nearly 500 million customers, according to a news release.

“Programmatic advertising is a complex challenge for publishers and many don’t have the time, resources or expertise to best navigate these changes on their own,” Walter Knapp, CEO of Sovrn, said in a statement. “Our aim is to help our customers make and keep more of their hard-earned revenues, giving them insights to make better decisions and investments.”

San Diego-based Proper Media’s header bidding platform is similar. It gives publishers access to enterprise-level technology with the goal of increasing revenue and streamlining operations.

“In Sovrn, we’ve found a partner that shares our view that publishers deserve better, and we now have the investment to drive further innovation in website monetization for publishers,” Chris Richmond, CEO and co-founder of Proper Media, said in a statement.

Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed. The acquisition will expand Sovrn’s products and services and, ideally, help publishers become more profitable.

According to Crunchbase, Sovrn has raised $55.5 million to date, including $25 million in 2018. The company is actively hiring for dozens of roles at its Boulder headquarters. Sovrn also has offices in New York, San Francisco and London.
