Sophia Genetics, a healthtech company out of Boston and Switzerland, has selected Aurora as the site of its new research and development facility and plans to hire 100 people there by 2022, as reported by the Denver Business Journal.

Aided by AI and predictive analytics, the company gathers genomic data and examines it to help health professionals identify potential indicators of cancer and hereditary disorders. The company also has an application that combines medical images with clinical data to predict tumor growth.

Sophia Genetics has raised more than $140 million to date, according to Crunchbase data, and claims its technology has been adopted in almost 1,000 hospitals around the world. The goal is to build out a robust community of healthcare institutions that will share their data, leading to more clinical trials, drug development and research.

“Our rapid market growth in the U.S. is attributed to our ability to connect gaps that exist in the global medical industry by democratizing data-driven medicine,” Kevin Puylaert, Sophia Genetics’ general manager of North America, said in a news release. “Now, Denver and the great analytical minds we hire here will help us propel this mission forward.”

This expansion into Colorado is thanks to a $1.87 million job growth tax incentive awarded by the state’s Economic Development Commission in January under the name “Project Crystal.” A Greenwood Village-based cloud distribution startup called Pax8 received similar funds from the EDC in February. Sophia Genetics says it will hire for its data science and IT teams, offering an average salary of $107,377 a year.

“Sophia Genetics’ R&D hub is a great addition to Colorado’s vibrant bioscience cluster,” Michelle Hadwiger, the global business director at the state’s Office of Economic Development and International Trade, said in a statement. “Their forecasted talent needs are quality jobs that align strongly with Colorado’s highly educated workforce.”
