Here's what a healthcare exec does at night to make his days productive

For Rob Scavo, president and COO of health optimization company Welltok, a successful day starts the night before. So in this installment of "First thing, Last thing," we're flipping the script, starting with how this leader ends every day to ensure a great one tomorrow. Here's what Scavo had to say:

LAST THING: A leader’s job is to keep the company moving forward. So every night, I take a moment to reflect on the day, what's been accomplished and how we're performing. I look ahead to what’s next and what needs attention tomorrow.

THE EFFECT: That kind of reflection helps me stay ahead of the game. Otherwise, there is a risk of falling into reaction mode. This is my undisturbed time to make decisions about where we need to focus or adjust, and have a game plan for the next day.

FIRST THING: Tactically, if you do a good job on reflection the night before, you wake up with clarity. You don’t have to do anything but get coffee and get going. Emotionally, I make a conscious decision to bring positive energy to the office. Granted, I’m still human and may be in a bad mood occasionally, but the team has come to expect a certain level of energy that is contagious and shapes the work environment.

THE EFFECT: You bring the energy you want others to have. By starting the day with positivity, you are not only motivating the team and leading by example, but you are also more productive and more adept at dealing with fires that may arise.
