The Denver area is one of the best places in the country for startup businesses. On this year’s Kauffman Index report, Denver unseated San Francisco, to take the number five spot on this year’s rankings for startup activity.

Every year the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation measures metrics associated with entrepreneurship in the United States. They look at things like the number of new entrepreneurs, the number of entrepreneurs who founded a company when employed, and the number of startups in a region per capita.

This year Denver moved up 3 spots in the rankings, overtaking San Francisco, New York and San Antonio. Austin took this year’s top prize, unseating Silicon Valley’s San Jose, which dropped two slots. Coming in above Denver was Austin, Miami, San Jose and Los Angeles. So, I guess you could say that Denver was the top city for startup activity that also experiences winter.

The study found that Denver had a high rate of new entrepreneurs. Where Denver really shined though, was the number of new startups created by people who are already employed. The city also received high marks for its startup density.

Colorado as a whole performed well in the rankings, taking the number 4 spot behind other states in the non-coastal West. Montana, Wyoming and North Dakota rounded out the top 3. Florida and Vermont were the only states east of Mississippi to break the top 10.
