The National Defense Strategic Business Unit works with members of the military, intelligence and defense communities to deliver space systems that drive mission success. From space situational awareness to Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance, we provide resilient mission-level solutions for the nation's greatest challenges.
Strategy & Business Development Manager - National Defense
Actively drive and support the National Defense Business Unit in the business development, capture and bid processes. This role is an experienced business partner to the National Defense business leaders to create, identify, pursue, develop, and bid business with national defense and intelligence organizations in high priority mission areas that leverage Ball Aerospace's technical discriminators.
This position reports to the Senior Director, Lifecycle Strategy National Defense, and is based in Broomfield, CO.
What You'll Do:

  • Partner with National Defense (ND) business leaders and functional leaders to formulate and execute a comprehensive strategy to capture new business in the defense and intelligence arena and ensure successful transition to proposal management and program execution.
  • Provide experienced leadership and mentoring of capture activities (from interest to program bid & award) to ND's Advanced Systems Managers (ASM) that reside within various Mission Areas.
  • Shape and/or update the ND business development, capture and bid processes and training materials to drive sustainable growth; provide recommended prioritization of opportunities and pursuits to leadership team.
  • Contribute to Strategic Planning for the Business Unit and implement the output of our strategic planning objectives in our pursuits.
  • Drive National Defense ASM professional development, e.g., training & "certification".
  • Enforce Ball business development Policies and Processes in ND.
  • Understand technology discriminators for National Defense, provide and prioritize them (IRAD and CRAD) to our Advanced Technology team.
  • Understand and communicate key issues and information regarding the intelligence community, DoD, and other national security organizations and develop action plans to address areas of interest to Ball.
  • Establish a professional network with customers and influencers and gain insight into organization direction, policies, priorities, plans, budget, and political environment.
  • Work closely with all Company and ND leadership to attain the strategic and financial goals.
  • Maintain a regular and predictable work schedule.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships within the department, the Strategic Business Units, Strategic Capabilities Units and the Company. Interact appropriately with others in order to maintain a positive and productive work environment.
  • Perform other duties as necessary.


What You'll Need:

  • BS/BA in related field plus 15 years or more related experience.
  • Each higher-level degree, i.e., Master's Degree or Ph.D., may substitute for two years of experience. Related technical experience may be considered in lieu of education. Degree must be from a university, college, or school which is accredited by an agency recognized by the US Secretary of Education, US Department of Education.
  • A current, active TS/SCI security clearance is required.
  • Experience with national security space systems and/or intelligence programs preferred.
  • Current knowledge and expertise in the business development process lifecycle from the identification of an opportunity through capture and bid.
  • Current and relevant experience developing and capturing new business with the intelligence community, DoD, and relevant organizations in the defense and intelligence space arena.
  • Knowledge of the Federal budget process.
  • Mission focused programmatic background with government or industry desirable.
  • Demonstrated ability to exhibit thought leadership in business development and strategy
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Demonstrated leadership and interpersonal skills in relevant business environments with strong collaboration skills.
  • Willing and able to work in a dynamic environment and possess an innovative spirit.
  • Effective in working with people at all levels and willing to contribute wherever needed, supporting operational activities as well as senior executives.


Flexible On-Site Work Environment: This position requires regular in-person engagement by working on-site for three or more days per work week. Travel and local commute between Ball campuses and other possible non-Ball locations may be required.
Working Conditions:

Verification that your current security clearance or government customer access meets the requirement for this position will be required.
Relocation for this position is available.
Compensation & Benefits:

  • HIRING SALARY RANGE: $171,000 - $235,500 (Salary to be determined by the education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities of the applicant, internal equity, and alignment with market data.)
  • Subject to business performance and recommendations of management, this role may be eligible to participate in an incentive compensation plan.
