According to a new survey from MarketWatch, a financial information website, Denver is among the best cities in the United States for business. Denver took the number 10 spot, coming in just behind Oklahoma City and ahead of Boston and Austin.

The survey ranked the 101 largest cities in the United States by business climate, company performance and economic outcome. To get the rankings the study looked at 10 metrics on cities with populations above 500,000. The metrics included things like: the number of companies per capita in a metropolitan area, GDP, growth, etc.

Denver scored 540 out of a possible 800 for business climate, 444 out of 800 for company performance, and 579 out of 750 for economic outcome. Our total score in the study was 1,563, 124 points behind Dallas, the national leader.

The study noted Denver's high level of education, vitality, and improving employment picture as strengths. But, the study also noted the area's relatively high cost of living as a weakness. Larger firms' lackluster performances on the NYSE and NASDAQ were also mentioned as weaknesses.

The only other city in Colorado large enough to make the list was Colorado Springs, which didn't fair well. Coming in at 73, the city received a score of 995 - just beating out places like Birmingham, Alabama.

Looking at the top 10, only Raleigh is located on the East Coast. In fact, Raleigh is the only city east of the Mississippi to break the top 10. Two cities in the Bay Area made the list, as did Texas' perennial business favorites, Houston and Dallas. You can find a full list of all 101 cities here.
