Investors play more roles than just the people who sign the checks. They’re able to channel their substantial business experience into advice, introductions, negotiations and more. For already-funded companies, an entrepreneur’s relationship with their investor(s) can be one of the most valuable resources to their business.
But how can entrepreneurs seeking funding or advice gain these insights if they don’t already have those key relationships?
As thought leaders in the startup and entrepreneurial space, many investors and VC firms choose to maintain blogs where they share musings on investment strategy, the entrepreneur’s journey and even personal experiences.
Here are some of our favorite Colorado VC blogs we think all entrepreneurs should read.
David Cohen, Techstars
Cohen’s blog has been around since March 2006. As Founder and Managing Partner of Techstars, Cohen focuses predominantly on funding issues, like dropping an investor or deciding whom and how to pitch. The comments section occasionally plays host to solid discussion and insights from other members of the community.
Brad Feld, Foundry Group
Since 2004, Feld has regularly updated his blog, FeldThoughts. He shares his thoughts on everything ranging from startup visas to book reviews and his experiences with insomnia and mental health. The posts are well-tagged, so it’s easy to take a deep-dive into a specific subject — including an entire category dedicated to Fitbits.
Various authors, Rockies Venture Club
As a resource for Colorado’s investment community, The Rockies Venture Club gathers insights from many different authors and community leaders. Their blog got its start in 2012, and they post fairly regularly with an extensive archive. From tips about tax breaks to updates about the club itself, their posts cover topics designed to help entrepreneurs and investors alike
Sue Heilbronner, MergeLane
An angel investor and co-founder of MergeLane, Heilbronner’s blog only has a handful of posts since 2014, but she provides useful insight to leadership, startup culture and mentoring. Heilbronner hosts a more regularly-updated podcast where she interviews founders and entrepreneurs, including a small write-up with every episode. Combining the blog and the podcast, visitors to Heilbronner’s site have the opportunity to learn more about Colorado’s startup landscape and hear from some of the community’s key players.
Various authors, Blue Note Ventures
Since starting it in 2014, members of VC firm Blue Note Ventures’ team have added various insights and musings to their blog. It’s updated sporadically, but it's definitely worth digging through the archives. The blog covers topics like leadership and the challenges of running a startup, and it even offers up guest spots to leaders from their portfolio companies.
