Amazon: Friend or Frenemy?

Let's say you want to make a purchase without leaving the comfort of your home, office, backyard, toilet, wherever.

What do you do?

Any rational person would go to Amazon.com, of course! Right?!

After all, Amazon is your friend...

But what if you're a seller on Amazon? Then is Amazon a friend or frenemy?

We, at The Colorado Entrepreneur Show, recently had the opportunity to interview ecommerce entrepreneur Craig Clark, founder of Pillows.com, where he shared the inside scoop about selling on Amazon.

Craig who was relatively early in the ecommerce game (read as: founded his company before Amazon) has bootstrapped from a part-time venture to a multi-million dollar business employing more than a dozen people. But, Pillows.com doesn't just sell any ordinary pillows. They carry only the highest quality hotel pillows. These pillows are in some of the nicest hotels around and where there's customers, there's, of course, competition.

“If I’m going to say what the most important thing you can do in ecommerce right now as a business, it’s that you need to develop a niche and you need to come up with your unique selling propositions…if you’re selling a commodity and the same thing that Amazon.com is selling, you’re going to get eaten alive, because they’re going to be able to ship faster, they’re going to be able to have more efficiencies in terms of their fulfillment…so you have to find a niche.”
