The best employer branding might have nothing to do with branding — at least where younger generations like Gen Z are concerned.

An increasing amount of research is showing that younger generations are most drawn to companies that have strong missions and that stick to them. Nearly two-thirds of Gen Z say it is “very or extremely important” to work for employers that share their values, according to a 2021 Ernst & Young survey. CareerBuilder also found that Gen Z expressed a greater desire to make the world a better place compared to other generations in the workplace.

This isn’t surprising, especially when other generations are considered as well. A study from Entrepreneur back in 2016 — when millennials were 20 to 35 years old — showed that 84 percent of millennials said that professional recognition wasn’t as important to them as making a difference.

Mission-focused work wasn’t the only factor that ranked high on the list. Gen Z, millennials, Gen X and baby boomers are all documented to want more flexibility and remote work options, according to Forbes. Seeing that the retirement age continues to increase, by the time that Gen Alpha reaches the workplace there will be five generations all actively engaged in the workforce. Companies that can show a commitment to mission-driven work while also meeting the needs of a hybrid workforce will be highly sought after.

Built In Colorado found three companies that are making a point to highlight mission-driven work and flexible workplace cultures.

What JumpCloud does: JumpCloud enables IT to securely manage user identities and connect them to resources regardless of provider, protocol, vendor or location.

Inside the mission: Building connections is not only a primary value at JumpCloud, it’s the core of the company’s product mission. JumpCloud’s mission is to “make work happen” by offering a cloud-based platform that helps remote and hybrid teams manage and access their IT resources. JumpCloud’s platform acts like a mission-control center for widespread IT, security and development teams to function as if they were in the same room.

What KPA does: KPA provides environment, health and safety; HR management; and finance and insurance compliance software.

Inside the mission: Part of being in the environment, health and safety field means looking ahead and understanding the root cause of something, and reacting quickly to the unexpected issues when they arise. The same could be said for employee mental health. In 2024, KPA rolled out a new benefit that is focused on supporting employee access to mental health care whenever they need it. Now, KPA team members and their families have access to mental health professionals anytime they would like — and KPA is covering 100 percent of the cost. Speaking of well-being, KPA is also partnering with Percent Pledge to offer a volunteer benefit to employees where they will be able to use their 16 hours of time off to make an impact in their community virtually or in person with volunteer time.

What AdSwerve does: Adswerve is digital consultancy at the intersection of media, data and technology.

Inside the mission: Adswerve prides itself on being a global company with a strong culture and thriving teams. What makes this possible is the company’s emphasis on what it calls the “three Cs”  — connectivity, community and creativity. The combination of all three are evident in the company’s DEI commitments and remote-first mentality. Teams at Adswerve make a point to collaborate equitably, whether that is at an in-person meetup or across the globe. This inherently draws employees from all over the world to work at Adswerve and brings in diverse perspectives from all over. The Adswerve website notes: “That’s something we value. A lot.”
