Denver-based EdgeMicro is a company that’s helping build the future of edge computing, and on Tuesday it scored a $5 million investment to reach this goal.

A lot of what we do on the internet relies on cloud computing, which involves data being stored on the internet through access to remote servers. This means our Google Drive documents or iCloud backups still rely on physical data servers despite the fact that it seems like they exist invisibly. As a result, people get faster access to these cloud services when they’re closer to these data servers or have a stronger connection.

Edge computing tries to strengthen access in underserved areas by building a network of mini data servers. These smaller data centers can store information locally or relay access to the main servers, thus supplementing the connection to these cloud services.

EdgeMicro is in the process of deploying hundreds of these data centers to underserved markets, and this new funding will help them build even more.

“We are pleased to support EdgeMicro as the company continues to bring crucial connectivity services through its micro data centers to underserved areas of the country,” Adam Lewis of financial advisor DH Capital, said in a statement. “With the nation’s rising demand for bandwidth, we believe EdgeMicro’s business model and expert team are well positioned to support the massive growth at the edge.”

Along with the funding, EdgeMicro announced the addition of Lauri Abrahamson as director of business development and Christian Kersgard as as senior manager of service delivery. The pair bring decades of experience in the telecom and data center industries.
