Denver announces plan to use mobile voting in next municipal election
Tusk Philanthropies, a company which works to increase voter turnout through blockchain-based mobile voting, announced this week that Denver would be the next jurisdiction to utilize its mobile voting technology. Denver is only the second city in the nation to partner with the company. West Virginia partnered with Tusk in 2018 to launch a secure military mobile voting application for the May and November primary and general elections. Denver will use the application to allow active-duty military, their eligible dependents and overseas voters to user their smartphones during the Denver municipal elections in May. [Read more.]
Gusto nabs Frederick Lee of Square as its new CSO
HR and payroll platform provider Gusto made a big hire this week, bringing on Frederick Lee as its new chief security officer. Lee most recently served as the head of information security for San Francisco tech giant Square and brings with him more than 15 years of experience leading information security and privacy efforts for financial services and tech companies like Bank of America, Betfair, NetSuite and Twilio. In his new role as CSO, Lee will lead Gusto’s information and physical security strategies, with a focus on consumer protection, compliance, governance and risk. [Read more.]
Lyft partners with RTD to expand ridesharing options for users
In a partnership with Denver’s Regional Transportation District, Lyft now enables local users to browse public transportation schedules and connections directly through its app. The goal is to help users find transportation options that work with their time and budget and to encourage users to better utilize public transportation — in addition to ridesharing. According to Lyft, 46 percent of its riders use public transportation once a week, and in Denver, at least 23 percent user the app to get where public transit routes don’t go. By combining both services, riders can more easily leverage both services, even within the same trip. RTD schedules and connections became available in the Lyft app on Monday. [Read more.]
Flatiron School partners with SeatGeek to give tech scholarships to women
Flatiron School, which has a campus in Denver, has announced a partnership this week with NYC-based SeatGeek that will bring more than $200,000 in scholarships to women looking to build a career in tech. From March 11 through March 31, any women who apply for Flatiron School’s tech education programs will be eligible to receive one of 60 $3,500 scholarships. The scholarship fund aims to further efforts to improve gender parity in the tech industry and open up more opportunities to women. [Read more.]
Gov. Jared Polis signs Colorado’s first blockchain bill into law
After months of discussion and collaboration between local politicians, state regulators and blockchain startups, Colorado has passed its first blockchain law. The wheels began turning last year when Gov. Hickenlooper appointed a 12-member blockchain technology council to build out necessary regulations while still creating an ecosystem in which blockchain companies can thrive. The Digital Token Act creates guidelines to determine whether digital tokens — such as Bitcoin, Ethereum or other spinoffs — are actually a securities investment, which would be regulated similarly to other financial securities. Another bill, the Colorado Cryptocurrency Tax Fairness Act, is in the works now, signaling more regulations to come. [Read more.]
