Colorado CTOs you should know: Patrick Leonard, CTO iTriage and Aetna Innovation & Digital Products

is working to empower everyday consumers to take control of their health through smart technology. Patrick Leonard, the CTO of iTriage and Aetna Innovation & Digital Products is responsible for the overall technology vision for Aetna Innovation and Digital Products. Leonard has over 20 years of experience building technologies for a variety of industries. We caught up with him to see what he had to say about Colorado's tech landscape:

What technologies power your business? All of our teams focus on building mobile and web applications to help people live healthier lives at less cost. Our mobile apps are native iOS and Android, our responsive web is built with Angular.js, and our API’s are built in Ruby on Rails and Node.js. For the past several years, we’ve also been building out a micro-service architecture that’ll enable us to continue our rapid growth rate without slowing down.

What upcoming tech project are you most proud of? We recently went live with a cloud ops platform as a service (PaaS) we call Utopia. It’s a containerized, HIPAA-compliant, self-service API that lets our engineering teams create their own instances and deploy code with automated checks to ensure the quality, security and compliance required for a healthcare app. I’m excited to see how it takes our agile development to the next level.

What trends do you see in the tech scene over the next three years? Technology patterns and disruptive business models that have been proven in consumer markets like music and finance are starting to move into more complex (and change resistant) industries like healthcare, education and energy. Technologists have a huge opportunity to take what we have learned from those markets and solve big problems in these important industries.

What sort of people do you look for when hiring? Culture is key. For us that includes passion for changing the healthcare industry, and doing something that has a significant benefit to society

What are some lessons you’ve learned about working in Colorado? It’s a small community and everyone knows everyone—take care of your relationships.
