Manager, Network Optimization Specialist

Position Description

This position is to manage the Network Optimization team. You will develop an employee-oriented company culture that emphasizes quality, continuous improvement, key employee retention and development, and high performance.

The team is responsible for Network Optimization initiatives for IP and Ethernet networks that are driven by Real Estate Forced Relocations, ISP Cost Savings, PG cost Savings, Network Modernization and Access Cost Reductions.  You will be responsible for analyzing and auditing traffic on existing network/device, design new path, traffic migration and updating database.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

  • This is a working manager position. You will be expected to perform the same work as your team. Those duties and responsibilities are shown below
  • Planning – Internal review of project to see cost and potential optimization at order/service level.  Existing equipment and new equipment, migration path
  • Engineering – Physical and logical audit of the circuits, notate database logistics
  • Engineer capacity details, such as router port, cross-connect, metro/in-building dark fiber
  • New circuit design and documentation
  • Create statement of work, create internal order forms (via Salesforce.com)
  • Operations -Create MOP, Schedule MR by contacting customer by phone or email
  • Secure internal resource NCC and Local Field Operation to get assistance in circuit migration
  • Update status and progress in salesforce on a daily and regular basis
  • Verify and update project documentation
  • Implementation and migration to complete optimization
  • Disconnect equipment
  • Update Database to complete the project

Management Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

  • Work with Human Resources staff to recruit, interview, select, hire employees
  • Provide oversight and direction to the employees
  • Coach, mentor and develop staff, including overseeing new employee onboarding and providing career development planning and opportunities
  • Empower employees to take responsibility for their jobs and goals. Delegate responsibility and expect accountability and regular feedback
  • Foster a spirit of teamwork and unity among department members that allows for disagreement over ideas, conflict and expeditious conflict resolution, and the appreciation of diversity as well as cohesiveness, supportiveness, and working effectively together to enable each employee and the department to succeed
  • Lead employees using a performance management and development process that provides an overall context and framework to encourage employee contribution and includes goal setting, feedback, and performance development planning
  • Provide effective performance feedback through employee recognition, rewards, and disciplinary action, with the assistance of Human Resources, when necessary
  • Maintain transparent communication. Appropriately communicate organization information through department meetings, one-on-one meetings, and appropriate email, IM, and regular interpersonal communication 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:

  • Knowledge and experience supervising employees in a team-oriented workplace preferred
  • Proven interpersonal relationship building and employee coaching and development skills
  • General knowledge of various employment laws and practices and employee relations
  • Familiar with fundamentals of IP routing and switching, including BGP, DNS, IP address management
  • Flexible schedule to support after-hours maintenance operations
  • Familiar with fundamentals of provisioning fiber based circuits in a datacenter environment, including patches, cross-connects, risers, and backhaul
  • Experience leading a team within a complex and fast-paced environment
  • Good problem-solving skills with the ability to focus on the salient facts in order to resolve an issue
  • Experience organizing multiple, time-sequenced tasks across several concurrent projects
  • Experience with Junos and Cisco IOS XR is a must
  • Familiar with Google docs & sheets, email
  • Good communication skills – verbal and written


  • Two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Two years of experience in the area of IP routing and network engineering
  • Preferred Certification – JNCIA, CCNA
