Corporate Counsel – Litigation

Position Description
Zayo is seeking an in-house attorney to manage Zayo’s global litigation and claims. This position will provide legal advice and assistance on complex and routine litigation as well as potential litigation involving the company.
Zayo is a dynamic company. We are looking for a self-starter who is excited by the opportunity to have a lot of autonomy and responsibility and a varied mix of work. This position will work directly and closely with the business as well as the rest of Zayo’s legal team.
Responsibilities
- Provide overall strategic and tactical direction of ongoing and threatened litigation matters.
- Advise the business on a broad range of potential disputes and their resolution.
- Negotiate and resolve pre-litigation claims assessed against the company in collaboration with the business.
- Manage affirmative actions on behalf of the company.
- Draft correspondence relating to disputes and claims.
- Manage internal document production in connection with claims and litigation.
- Retain and oversee outside counsel.
- Manage outside counsel fees and budgets, and negotiate fee arrangements and manage cases to minimize litigation costs.
- Advise business, including senior leadership, on key developments, strategy, settlement and other key decisions.
- Attend mediations, settlement conferences, trials, etc. on behalf of the company.
- Maintain a database of all litigation/claims matters in the company, reporting on the same on a regular basis to senior management, the board of directors, and external auditors.
- Work with financing reporting team and business leads on accruals.
- Manage insurance claims, demands, and suits.
- Manage M&A post-closing indemnity claims, demands, and suits.
- Assist and advise on employment law issues.
- Manage employment claims.
- Assist in management of customer payment disputes, collections issues, and bankruptcy claims.
- M&A due diligence relating to litigation and claims.
- Assist in responding, on behalf of the company, to attorney letters and agency matters including charges and government-initiated inquiries and audits, subpoenas, and garnishing orders.
- Pursue and defend network damage recovery claims.
- Ability to travel at least 10% of time to meet with business and outside counsel and attend legal proceedings.
Qualifications
- Law Degree and Bar Admission required
- 4+ years of relevant post-bar professional experience required
- Prior experience with general commercial litigation required
- Prior experience with labor and employment issues and litigation preferred
- Experience in formal and informal dispute resolution included direct negotiations and mediation
- Excellent verbal and interpersonal skills required
- Ability to communicate with other personnel and external parties through strong, organized writing and verbal skills
- Strong attention to detail
- Strong organizational skills, including management of projects and workload, and setting goals and priorities
- Team player, able to work cooperatively with business people and outside counsel to find practical and creative solutions
- Computer and software systems experience
- Prior experience successfully operating in a fluid and entrepreneurial environment
