IP / Ethernet Operations Engineer II

Position Description
Engineers have intimate knowledge of Layer 2 and Layer 3 carrier networks, networking protocols and services including STP, REP, VLANs, ERP (G.8031/2) MPLS L2 / L3, DIA, VPLS, IPVPN, ISIS, BGP, OSPF, DDOS, and CWDM . Candidate should possess excellent communication skills, and should be able to perform in-depth troubleshooting of all network issues that arise, often communicating directly with vendor technical support and high-level customer contacts. The best candidate will possess in-depth knowledge of various vendors including Cisco, Juniper, BTI (Juniper), ALU (Nokia), Cyan (Ciena), Arbor, and Accedian and other vendor NID's. The primary function of an Engineer II, RNS Specialist is to perform network surveillance, sustain network health (MTTR) and engage in break-fix escalations. These individuals will have daily expectations but are driven by customer cases, outages and projects in support of the IP and Ethernet network.
Responsibilities
RNS Technical Escalation: The primary function of the Tier II RNS Engineer Specialist will be to serve as the highest level of technical support in the Operations organization, serving as a technical escalation point for the RNS NCC. Engineers will be responsible for engaging the vendor and high-level customer contacts routinely.
Network Health and Visibility: The candidate will play a key role in driving efficacy of tooling. This includes network capacity monitoring, link and node level failure scenarios, and traffic engineering.
Network Fault Management: The Tier II RNS Engineer Specialist will be expected to perform fault isolation and repair of Ethernet and IP platforms, particularly on widespread outages or escalated issues by the RNS NCC.
Network Performance Management: The Tier II RNS Engineer Specialist is responsible for operating routine performance monitoring and management of systems, including graphing, logging and alarming.
Network Maintenance Support: The Tier II RNS Engineer Specialist should read and understand the process for implementing network maintenance activities, create and execute MOPs as well as troubleshoot unexpected outages.
Vendor Management: Collaborates with Architecture/Engineering for vendor related issues & escalations. Review Vendor Bulletins (PCNs), publish impact statements and create plans for implementation of PCNs if applicable and in the best interests of the company. Track open issues with vendors to resolution and provide regular readouts on open vendor issues and recommendations for upgrades or removal/replacement of vendor technologies.
Qualifications
Ideal candidate has a Bachelor of Science degree (B. S.) or equivalent from a four-year University or technical school and 8 to 16 years related experience.
Prior experience working at a vendor is desired but not required.
Competitive compensation - $58,100 - $77,450
