The Director of Data Governance & Operations plays a critical role in driving the organization's data governance strategy and framework, ensuring the integrity and usability of data assets, mitigating data risks, and fostering a data-driven culture. By providing leadership, guidance, and expertise, they help maximize the value of data and enable effective decision-making throughout the organization. This individual plays a crucial role in ensuring that data is managed effectively, securely, and in compliance with relevant regulations and policies.
Responsibilities
1. Strategy and Planning:
- Develop and execute a data governance strategy that aligns with the organization's goals and objectives.
- Define the vision, mission, and goals of the data governance program.
- Establish a roadmap and action plan for implementing and maturing data governance practices.
2. Policy and Standards Development:
- Create and maintain data governance policies, procedures, and standards.
- Define guidelines for data quality, data classification, data privacy, data security, and other relevant areas.
- Ensure policies are communicated effectively and enforced across the organization.
3. Data Stewardship:
- Identify and assign data stewards responsible for specific data domains or business areas.
- Define the roles and responsibilities of data stewards and provide guidance and support to them.
- Facilitate collaboration between data stewards and business users to ensure data integrity and quality.
4. Data Management Framework:
- Establish a framework for managing data throughout its lifecycle, including data creation, acquisition, integration, storage, usage, and disposal.
- Define data management processes such as data profiling, data cleansing, data integration, and data retention.
- Ensure compliance with relevant data regulations and industry standards.
5. Data Review Board / Governance Council:
- Establish and lead a data review board or steering committee consisting of key stakeholders from various business units.
- Provide oversight, guidance, and decision-making authority for data governance initiatives.
- Facilitate regular meetings, report progress, and seek approvals for data-related policies or projects.
6. Data Privacy and Compliance:
- Ensure compliance with data protection regulations such as GDPR, CCPA, and others relevant to the organization.
- Collaborate with legal and compliance teams to assess and address privacy risks.
- Establish data privacy controls, respond to data breaches or incidents, and fulfill data subject requests.
7. Data Education and Awareness:
- Promote data literacy and awareness across the organization.
- Conduct training sessions, workshops, or awareness campaigns to educate employees about data governance principles, best practices, and their roles.
- Foster a data-driven culture and advocate for the value and importance of data governance.
8. Data Governance Tools and Technologies:
- Evaluate, select, and implement data governance tools and technologies that support data management, metadata management, data quality monitoring, and other relevant capabilities.
- Collaborate with IT teams to ensure the tools align with the organization's infrastructure and security requirements.
9. Performance Measurement and Reporting:
- Define key performance indicators (KPIs) and metrics to measure the effectiveness of data governance initiatives.
- Establish processes to monitor data quality, compliance, and the overall health of the data governance program.
- Provide regular reports to senior management and stakeholders to demonstrate progress and identify areas for improvement.
10. Continuous Improvement:
- Continuously review and enhance the data governance program based on feedback, lessons learned, and evolving business needs.
- Stay up-to-date with industry trends, emerging technologies, and regulatory changes that may impact data governance practices.
- Identify and implement opportunities for innovation and efficiency in data governance processes.
Qualifications
As a Director of Data Governance, you would be expected to possess a combination of technical expertise, leadership skills, and business acumen. The key qualifications included, but are not limited to:
1. Education and Knowledge:
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in a relevant field such as computer science, information systems, data management, or a related discipline.
- Advanced knowledge and hands on experience at scale of data governance principles, practices, and methodologies.
- Advanced knowledge and hands on experience at scale with data management concepts, including data quality, data integration, metadata management, data privacy, and data security.
- Advanced knowledge and hands on experience with Agile, Scaled Agile and Scrum
- Advanced Financial Acumen and Modeling skills
- Advanced Portfolio Management and Value Chain skills
- Expert Jira Knowledge and Experience
- Understanding of regulatory requirements and compliance frameworks related to data, such as GDPR, CCPA, HIPAA, or industry-specific regulations are preferred.
2. Experience:
- 10+ years of Data, Technology, Agile, Finance Experience at Scale
- Proven experience in data governance or a related field, with progressively increasing responsibilities.
- Experience in leading and managing data governance programs or initiatives within an organization.
- Knowledge of data governance tools, technologies, and data management frameworks.
- Familiarity with data-related roles and responsibilities, such as data stewards, data owners, and data custodians.
3. Leadership and Communication:
- Strong leadership skills with the ability to provide direction, motivate teams, and drive change.
- Excellent communication skills to articulate complex concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Ability to collaborate and influence across different business units and levels of the organization.
- Experience in building and managing cross-functional teams and fostering a culture of data governance.
4. Analytical and Problem-Solving Skills:
- Expert analytical and problem-solving abilities to identify root causes of data issues, assess risks, and develop effective solutions.
- Ability to apply critical thinking and make data-driven decisions.
- Proficiency in data analysis and data profiling techniques to assess data quality and identify improvement opportunities.
5. Business Acumen:
- Understanding of the organization's business processes, goals, and challenges.
- Ability to align data governance initiatives with the strategic objectives of the organization.
- Experience in translating business requirements into data governance policies and standards.
6. Regulatory and Compliance Knowledge:
- Knowledge of data protection and privacy regulations and their implications on data governance practices.
- Familiarity with compliance frameworks and industry standards relevant to data governance.
7. Continuous Learning:
- Willingness to stay updated with the latest trends, technologies, and best practices in data governance.
- Participation in relevant professional communities, conferences, and training programs.
Base pay range: $180,000 - $200,000, commensurate with experience
