The Analytics Engineering Manager will be highly focused on leading a dynamic team of people to help develop and build the next generation of Analytics/Business Intelligence tools and technology for the InsurTech space. The Manager will drive stability, and production by leading the team focused on design delivery and management of team deliverables. Pie's Analytics Engineering Manager is eager to drive a strong engineering vision, lead a team, and scale the technology while fostering a collaborative, inclusive culture and should have an overall desire to help develop team members along their career path.
As the Analytics Engineering Manager, you will be at the intersection of Data Engineering, Analytics/Underwriting, Data Science, Product, Marketing, Finance and other business units; serving as an established technical leader and in-house data expert, and enabling these teams to make forward-thinking, data-driven decisions. You will be accountable for the intake and prioritization process for analytical needs, and work closely with stakeholders (engineering and business leadership) to deeply understand the business problems and to prioritize, formulate, and act on business opportunities.
How You'll Do It
- Support a hardworking team of analytics engineers and build an environment underpinned by Pie's values and the team competency framework.
- Work with stakeholders to build data-driven models for business growth such as forecasting and anomaly detection.
- Collaborate closely with data engineers and data scientists to provide best in class actionable insights.
- Provide technical mentorship and expertise as part of our design and development processes.
- Ensure the team aligns with Pie and the Technology Team's OKRs, adheres to proper unit and regression testing and coding standards.
- Collaborate with leaders in data engineering, engineering, product management, and business stakeholders on roadmap, strategy, coordinating dependencies, establishing clear requirements to effectively meet delivery and quality commitments.
- Provide guidance to the team and vendors to successfully complete projects. Guidance may include - scoping business questions, data mining, statistical models, customer segmentation, pricing analytics and presentation of insights.
- Continuously learn about the industry trends and up-level organizational knowledge in data-related fields.
- Articulate project goals, deliverables and timelines for dashboards and data infrastructure.
- Lead and develop an awesome Analytics Engineering team, focus on retaining and attracting great talent, and contribute to an inclusive work environment where every employee can effectively engage and wants to be part of the team.
The Right Stuff
- BS in Computer Science, Statistics, Physics, Engineering, Operations Research, Math, or related field is preferred.
- Minimum of 5 years of progressive overall engineering experience, or equivalent in a technology, start-up, data warehousing, or other analytical role.
- An understanding of the insurance industry and products is a plus.
- 1-2 years of experience technically leading a small team on deliverables and/or project functions/areas is preferred.
- A desire to mentor, coach, and develop engineers is required.
- Advanced experience writing, optimizing and validating SQL queries.
- Experience developing BI reports and dashboard solutions using various platforms (e.g., MicroStrategy, Looker, Tableau, etc.).
- Demonstrated ability to work with geographically distributed team members successfully is required.
- Knowledge of data engineering concepts: data schemas, blob storage, relational databases, ETL/ELT pipelines.
- Experience with modeling Data Warehouse schemas (Data Vault, 3NF model, Kimball Star Schema, and Dimensional model)
- Proficient understanding of data analytics, e.g., machine learning, statistics, regression analysis.
- Knowledge of modern CI/CD concepts (continuous integration and delivery, project management and reporting tools, Gitlab, CI/CD tools, Jira, Confluence, etc.).
- Experience working with business partners to understand business problems, devise scalable solutions to meet their needs, and articulate technical solutions to all business stakeholders.
- Attentive to detail with strong quality control, especially in regard to large-scale data changes.
- Solid problem solving and analytical skills; able to quickly digest any issue/problem encountered and recommend appropriate solution options.
- Ability to analyze business requirements in various business functional areas and translate them into conceptual, logical and physical data models.
- Collaborate with peers to find solutions to complex problems. Share knowledge with your peers and also learn from them as required.
- Support conclusions with analytical evidence using descriptive statistics, basic inferential statistics, and data visualizations.
- A passion for correctness with off-the-chart problem solving and analytical skills.

This role has the option to be hybrid or remote. Hybrid work locations provide team members with the flexibility of working partially from our Denver or DC office and from home. Remote team members must live and work in the United States* (*territories excluded), and have access to reliable, high-speed internet.

Base compensation range for position: $176,000 - $228,500
Each year Pie reviews company performance and may grant discretionary bonuses to eligible team members.
