zvelo is actively looking for a Vice President of DevOps that leads the company’s development, staging and production systems and teams.  This person will drive the vision, design, strategy, and implementation of SOA platform development, enhancements and implementation of AI-based microservices on the platform, as well as the production systems required to deliver the market’s leading content classification and malicious detection services. 

The individual will build (through a combination of current employees and hiring) the full-stack engineer, back-end engineer, API/SDK engineer, AI/ML engineer, data scientist, and data operations teams. 

These individuals and teams will collaborate closely with the service delivery, sales, marketing, and finance departments for product roadmap planning, design/development and roll out of new functionality as well as ongoing improvements of current systems.

This individual keeps up with new technologies, evaluating and approving architectural proposals. This leader has a strong vision for the department and promotes the best organizational and leadership practices. This individual tackles high-level challenges and balances quality software with speed. The person is responsible for feature deployment, stability of the business’s core SOA platform, and the delivery of new AI/ML-based services on the platform.

The individual’s ability to be a proactive problem-solver, engaged in the strategy and operation of the business, highly engaged overall, and passionate about successfully mentoring a growing DevOps team, are critical attributes to being successful in this role.

What We’re Looking For

Supervisory/Leadership Role: 

  • Plays a leadership role in the engineering, AI/ML, and data ops departments, seeking excellence in all engineering disciplines including full-stack engineering, front-end engineering, back-end engineering, code management, quality assurance, analytics, machine learning, algorithms, and data science/mining, as well as the data operations disciplines and functions.
  • The individual manages the day-to-day activities of DevOps Engineering, AI/ML, and Data Ops teams as well as setting and managing development projects against delivery commitments and project plan expectations, challenging and holding teams accountable for successful outcomes, as well as identifying and managing risk issues. The position holds weekly 1:1 sessions with the team members to provide feedback and guidance as necessary.  The position is also in charge of the management of the department’s staffing, resources, and mentoring, maintaining a best-in-class DevOps organization.
  • The individual leads the DevOps team in the delivery of platform functionality and performance, and helps the team in achieving and surpassing departmental goals. This position provides hands-on resource and project management for all engineering, development, AI/ML, and data operations activities across the develop, staging and production environments.
  • The individual takes the lead with a profound understanding of new and relevant technologies for the purpose of realizing efficiency in the company’s engineering, AI/ML, development, data operations and production processes.   This role closely collaborates with software engineers, data operations engineers, AI/ML engineers and scientists to establish the technical and architectural roadmaps for the company, including assessment of new technologies in the fields of SOA, database, AI/ML, and cybersecurity. 
  • This position ensures the optimal application of distributed engineering and other DevOps resources through tools such as Github and Slack in order to meet product development and partner requirements and ensures the implementation of agile methodologies and short iteration cycles and that focus on continuous software development and delivery of new functionality into production systems. 
  • The individual plays a leading role in the recruiting activities of the DevOps personnel in order to ensure consistency in departmental efficiency and utilization. The individual plays a mentorship role to key DevOps engineering, AI/ML, and data ops personnel, assisting in their duties upon request, and constantly promoting the growth of their professional skills.

Strategy

  • The Vice President of DevOps develops strategic plans with regard to the technical development of software and establishes the business’ technical vision that guides all aspects of technological development. This role also oversees the strategic deployment of the departmental resources leading to optimal resource allocation and the smooth and successful delivery of new functionality to the company’s production systems.
  • The individual is responsible for the overall software development life-cycle.

Key Skills

  • Collaborative Skills: The role is also highly collaborative. The Vice President of DevOps will be highly engaged and work closely with software, AI/ML and data ops engineers in the management and development of strategic planning and will also work closely with the Service Delivery, Sales and Marketing departments to ensure there is a clear understanding of the operational and market requirements and expectations. This role will set the bar for the energy and passion within DevOps and be an example across the company.
  • Meeting Expectations and Feedback:  The individual also works with senior engineers to ensure that expectations are consistently met or exceeded.  Additionally, the individual will be responsible for reporting to the executive team and board on the status of KPIs and milestones for deliverables and production systems and services
  • Knowledge: The individual will be passionate about staying abreast of leading and cutting-edge technologies and industry best practices. This position evaluates and absorbs relevant and suitable technology based on the projected benefits to DevOps.
  • Other Duties: The individual performs similar duties as he deems necessary for the proper execution of his duties and duties as delegated by the President.

 

Requirements

  • Education: The Vice President of DevOps will have a BS CS (Master’s degree preferred) with 12+ years of industry experience, of which 5+ years is in DevOps, Engineering and/or Data Ops Management.  
  • Experience: 
    • A candidate for this position must have 5 years of supervisory or management experience with teams that includes senior software engineers, malicious detection analysts, ML/AI engineers, data scientists, data operations, and/or similar personnel.
    • The candidate will have had significant experience in software engineering, software development, data analytics, data operations, and experience working with numerous software-industry business models, including Data or Software as a Service, Cyber Security, Big Data or Subscriber Analytics. 
    • A candidate will also have demonstrated experience in the management of a geographically distributed team and be effective at using tools such as hangouts, slack, and Github to manage teams for successful, consistent, on-time delivery of objectives and operation of production systems.
    • The candidate will also have had vast experience building, delivering and supporting market-facing SDKs, APIs and data feed offerings.  A suitable candidate will further have had vast experience in agile development practices and architectural knowledge of web-based and backend technologies.
  • Communication Skills: Communication skills both in written and verbal form are imperative for the Vice President of DevOps. The candidate will need to have exceptionally good communication skills in the leadership position where the clarity of communication to geographically distributed engineering personnel will determine the success or failure of the delivery of software into the production environment that is consistently on-time and meets expectations. Communication skills will also be necessary in providing updates for the executive team, as well as creating and presenting updates and objectives to the company’s board.   
  • Technology/Software: The individual must be technologically adept and demonstrate outstanding understanding of modern DevOps technologies and best practices, with knowledge of the company’s chosen technologies, systems, data and delivery methods, including Docker, Kubernetes, AI-based microservices, malicious and phishing detection.
  • Interpersonal Skills: A candidate for this position will also possess certain personal attributes. The candidate will be high energy, highly engaged, a passionate champion for the standards that go into delivering the market’s best offering. They are be a creative and strategic thinker, working comfortably in a highly collaborative environment and be effective in a constantly evolving environment.  The candidate must be naturally and innately curious, a lifelong learner, have a thirst for knowledge, and have an ability to remain calm and composed in times of uncertainty and stress, inspiring the same in others.
