Senior Counsel - Labor & Employment
Summary
As part of the Legal team, the Senior Counsel - Labor & Employment will support our Human Resources function and other cross functional teams and businesses, with a primary focus on helping build and improve global processes and policies, and evaluating and implementing employment and labor relations strategies worldwide. Previous experience working on COVID issues (ideally globally) over the past year+ is required. This person will also provide employment-related support for the company’s M&A activities. This role will report to Workiva’s Chief Legal Officer.
Responsibilities
- Advise on all aspects of labor and employment regulations, policies and practices, preferably with an emphasis on Iowa, Arizona, Colorado and Montana law. Identify issues that require analysis and attention in other jurisdictions, including outside the United States.
- Draft, review and implement employment-related policies and procedures. Create and update employee agreement templates.
- Counsel on issues relating to employee recruiting, including non-competition obligations, non-solicitation obligations, and other restrictive covenants.
- Develop and update compliance policies and programs, with respect to both labor and employment matters (e.g., anti-harassment; anti-discrimination), and more general compliance matters (e.g., anti-corruption; business conduct and ethics).
- Assist in employment-related internal investigations, and manage outside counsel in employment-related litigation, arbitration and mediation.
- Coordinate with Workiva’s data privacy counsel to advise on privacy/data protection questions as they relate to labor and employment matters.
What You'll Need
Education
- J.D. from an accredited law school and licensed practice law
- Deep, substantive knowledge of labor and employment law and its practical application.
- High level of professionalism, strong communication skills, and outstanding judgment.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues from across the company.
- Creativity, flexibility, and willingness to consider different viewpoints.
- Ability to manage independently multiple matters under tight deadlines.
- Ability to travel (10%). Position location is flexible, but preferably within commuting distance of a Workiva office in Iowa, Chicago, New York, Colorado or Arizona (flexible WFH arrangement available).
- Minimum of 6 years employment law experience, including counseling, investigations and litigation.
- Experience developing and implementing compliance and ethics policies and programs.
- In-house experience preferred, but not required.
- Prior experience advising cross functional teams about COVID matters (Mandatory)
- Experience supporting the Human Resources function and hiring managers preferred.
- Experience supporting the Corporate Development function preferred.
- Excellent academic credentials preferred.
- Experience working with software or technology companies.
- 10%.
- Reliable internet access for any period of time working remotely, not in a Workiva office.
How You'll Be Rewarded
Base Pay Range in Colorado: $144,000- $196,000
Discretionary bonus typically paid annually
Restricted Stock Units granted at time of hire
The base pay range represents the low and high end of the hiring range for this job. Actual pay will vary and may be above or below the range based on various factors including but not limited to relevant skills, experience, and capabilities.
