About the role:
Brilliant Earth is currently seeking a compliance and contracts attorney to join our fast-growing team. The Counsel, Compliance & Contracts is responsible for the development of program materials and execution of strategy for the Company’s efforts related to its compliance efforts. The position also serves as a corporate generalist, providing practical, business savvy, legal advice and counsel for the Company and its leadership team. Drafts, reviews, negotiates and advises on a variety of contracts and provides guidance and strategic counsel to the Company on issues which arise from day-to-day operations. Collaborates cross functionally to provide risk-based legal advice and counsel. Coordinates, conducts and oversees development of legal research and analysis to facilitate and enhance the internal decision-making process and to ensure adequate protection of the Company’s legal rights, interests and objectives.
What You’ll Do:
- Keep corporate compliance policies, including our supplier code of conduct, privacy policy, website terms and conditions and other external/internal legal language current and compliant with applicable laws and regulations
- Supports compliance efforts by conducting program planning and reviews, preparing and completing action plans and implementing measures and standards with respect to the systems of compliance management.
- Negotiate and draft commercial contracts in collaboration with executive team members
- Work alongside executive team members to resolve legal matters that may arise regarding Brilliant Earth contracts and compliance
- Coordinate with third-party counsel as appropriate to support company legal needs
- Proactively review legal and regulatory environment to identify areas for continuing improvement in Company legal policies
- Provide guidance for continuous improvement of all risk and compliance related policies, processes and procedures.
- Maintain and enhance workflow for review, approval and maintenance of legal documents
You’re a great fit if you have:
- JD degree or equivalent required
- 3-5+ years of experience as counsel (in-house preferred) for a rapidly growing entrepreneurial company, with expertise in contracts and compliance, e-commerce company experience strongly preferred.
- Strong practical knowledge of legal, regulatory and compliance issues facing B2C companies, including experience developing and enhancing supplier codes of conduct and compliance programs
- Strong practical knowledge of contract law, consumer law and privacy law
- Robust communication skills to effectively interact with both internal and external contacts, coordinate legal activities and formulate contracts and policy recommendations
- Demonstrated success in developing and improving corporate compliance policies and negotiating corporate contracts
- Experience implementing and improving legal document review, approval and maintenance workflows, including the use of eSignature platforms such as DocuSign or HelloSign
- Highly organized with exceptional attention to detail with focus on execution, problem solving, and improving processes
- Experience working in a fast-paced, dynamic environment requiring new process improvement, task prioritization, and strong project management
- Proven ability to develop strong working relationships with cross functional partners and influence and drive results cross functionally
- Entrepreneurial mindset with the ability to think critically and adapt quickly in a flexible environment
- Demonstrates integrity and strategic, data-driven approach to decision making. Strong collaboration and persuasion skills.
