Human Resources Manager

Overview: GrowGeneration is one of the largest retailers of hydroponic products in the United States and is engaged in the business of marketing and distributing horticultural, organics, lighting and hydroponics products, including lighting fixtures, nutrients, seeds and growing media, systems, trays, fans, filters, humidifiers and dehumidifiers, timers, instruments, water pumps, irrigation supplies and hand tools. We have grown into a chain of twenty four (24) retail hydroponic/garden centers in 8 states, with five (5) located in Colorado, five (5) in California, four (4) in Michigan, three (3) in Maine, three (3) in Oklahoma, two (2) in Nevada, one (1) in Washington, and one (1) in Rhode Island.

Reports To: Chief Financial Officer

Summary

Develops policy and directs and coordinates human resources activities and the full cycle of employment for a 190 headcount, publicly-traded company in growth mode. Essential duties include recruiting and onboarding, payroll, compensation, benefits, training, labor relations, compliance and employee support.

 

Systems: Paylocity (Payroll/HRIS), Newton (ATS), DDI (Accounting), Concur (expense reporting), Microsoft Outlook, SharePoint, and Teams.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develops and maintains a human resources system that meets top management information needs.
  • Prepares weekly and semi-monthly payroll
  • Oversees the analysis, maintenance, and communication of records required by law or local governing bodies, or other departments in the organization.
  • Writes directives advising department managers of Company policy
  • Consults legal counsel to ensure that policies and practices comply with federal and state law.
  • Analyzes wage and salary reports and data to determine competitive compensation plan.
  • Identifies legal requirements and government reporting regulations affecting human resources functions and ensures policies, procedures, and reporting are in compliance. Studies legislation, arbitration decisions, and legal updates to assess industry trends.
  • Writes and delivers presentations to corporate officers regarding human resources policies and best practices.
  • Recruits, interviews, screens, and selects employees to fill vacant positions. Guides hiring managers on the recruiting process
  • Plans and conducts new employee orientation to foster positive attitude toward Company goals.
  • Keeps records of benefits plans participation such as insurance and 401(k) plans, personnel transactions such as hires, promotions, transfers, pay changes, performance reviews, and terminations, and employee statistics for government reporting.
  • Coordinates management training on a variety of topics including interviewing, performance reviews, leadership, terminations, safety, and sexual harassment.
  • Advises management in appropriate resolution of employee relations issues.
  • Responds to inquiries regarding policies, procedures, and programs.
  • Administers performance review program to ensure effectiveness, compliance, and equity within organization. Administers salary administration program to ensure compliance and equity within organization.
  • Administers benefits programs such as life, health, and dental insurance, pension plans, vacation, sick leave, leave of absence, and employee assistance.
  • Investigates accidents and prepares reports for insurance carrier. Coordinates Safety Committee meetings and acts as Safety Director.
  • Prepares budget of human resources operations.
  • Prepares employee separation notices and related documentation, and conducts exit interviews to determine reasons behind separations.
  • Prepares reports and recommends procedures to reduce absenteeism and turnover.
  • Represents organization at personnel-related hearings and investigations.
  • Contracts with outside suppliers to provide employee services, such as temporary employees, search firms, or relocation services

Education, Certifications, and Experience

Bachelor’s degree (B.A.) from four-year college or university

Five to ten years of experience.

SHRM Certified Professional (SHRM-CP) or Professional in Human Resources (HRCI-PHR) credential preferred.

 

Language Skills

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret complex documents. Ability to respond effectively to the most sensitive inquiries or complaints. Ability to write speeches and articles using original or innovative techniques or style. Ability to make effective and persuasive speeches and presentations on controversial or complex topics to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.

 

Mathematical Skills

Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

 

Reasoning Ability

Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems. Ability to deal with nonverbal symbolism (formulas, scientific equations, graphs, etc.,) in its most difficult phases. Ability to deal with a variety of abstract and concrete variables. High level of emotional intelligence.

 

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand and walk. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 15 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. Work Environment

The work environment is a small, 10-person office adjacent to a Retail location (headquarters). Expected office hours are 7:00a-4:00p, 8:00a-5:00p, or 9:00a-6:00p.

 

Compensation: is commensurate with experience. Full-time GrowGeneration employees enjoy Paid Time Off accruals, participation in group health insurance, dental, vision, and supplemental plans, plus eligibility to participate in the company-sponsored 401(k) plan with up to a 4% match.
