Assistant Controller
Description
The Assistant Controller role is a highly visible opportunity in a fast-paced environment that will have direct influence and empowerment over many accounting related activities including establishing accounting policy and leading accounting teams. The Assistant Controller will be responsible for the supervision of assigned areas of the general ledger, which includes but is not limited to revenue (in accordance with ASC 606), operating expenses, accounts payable, accounts receivable, cash, fixed assets, capitalized internally developed software, intangible assets, foreign currency translation, consolidations, as well as, technical accounting research. The Assistant Controller is responsible for managing the teams to ensure that work is properly allocated and completed in a timely and accurate manner to meet tight deadlines. This is a very exciting and challenging position, which will require both accounting and business acumen as well as the ability to work cross-functionally across departments.
The candidate should have a CPA or equivalent with 7+ years of experience including Big 4/Regional Public accounting and relevant SaaS company industry experience (including ASC 606). We are looking for someone that enjoys solving challenging problems and is looking for a broad set of accounting-related responsibilities. The right person will be ambitious with leadership qualities who wants to learn and grow professionally at a growing healthcare technology company.
Responsibilities
- Manage worldwide month-end close processes to ensure the timely reporting of all monthly financial information and maintain close deadlines while managing expectations and requirements.
- Ensures complete, timely, and accurate accounting month-end, quarter-end and annual close in collaboration with internal stakeholders (FP&A, sales operations, service delivery, product, IT etc.).
- Manages and oversees revenue accounting, general ledger, accounts receivable/billing/contracts and accounts payable.
- Reviews month-end account reconciliations to ensure the financial reporting is accurate and in accordance with documented accounting policies.
- Development, implementation, and continuous improvement of policies and processes to enhance the workflow of the accounting department.
- Manages the annual audit with external auditors.
- Performs technical financial accounting research and evaluates the impact to a company’s accounting policies, procedures, and disclosures.
- Develops and nurtures positive relationships cross-functionally between accounting, finance, procurement, legal, product, sales, sales operations, etc.
- Leads system implementations and process improvement initiatives; may participate in other systems and process improvement initiatives.
- Troubleshoot ERP issues, design processes to maximize system functionality, and develop training programs for team members if needed. Complete ad-hoc analysis and projects supporting the Controller and provide appropriate decision support information.
- Hires, trains and evaluates employees to enhance their performance, development, and work product. Addresses performance issues and makes recommendations for personnel actions. Works with each direct report to establish goals and objectives for each year and monitor and advise on the progress to enhance the professional development of staff.
Requirements
- BS/BA in accounting
- CPA certification required
- Public accounting experience required
- 7+ years of experience in an accounting leadership role
- Solid knowledge of GAAP/technical accounting principles and compliance including in-depth knowledge of ASC 606
- SAAS revenue experience, including subscription billing and revenue recognition in accordance with ASC 606
- Data analysis/management capabilities
- Interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with people at every level of the organization
- People management experience with the ability to mentor, develop, and motivate employees
- The ability to think strategically and efficiently
- Comfortable working in a dynamic fast-paced environment that undergoes rapid change will be imperative
- Detail oriented with a high level of accuracy when both preparing and reviewing work
- Experience with an enterprise ERP
- Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel
- Team player with strong written and verbal communication skills
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize and multi-task
- Ability to work well under pressure, multi-task and meet deadlines
Preferred Experience
- Experience at a SaaS company
- Experience with international accounting and experience with foreign exchange calculations
